Feeding my 7 mth old is a nightmare
I don't know what to do. His ped was concerned about him gaining weight last check up. He gained 4 ounces and is up to 16.8. He is a VERY active child so I am not that worried about the weight gain.
What frustrates me is feeding him. Even the people at his daycare say he is a sweet baby but feeding his is super tough. This weekend was horrible. The minute I put him in his highchair he starts crying. He clamps his mouth shut - I even tried adding more liquid to change the consistency. We tired all different types of food and he is just not interested. He drinks his bottle but that's all he wants. Its as if he gets better for a few days and then the cycle begins agin where he does not want anything except the bottle. I don't know if I should just stop trying and give him the bottle.

Re: Feeding my 7 mth old is a nightmare
I know this is a BAD habit to start but it works for my son (who is also a mouth clamper) - Baby Einstein. I let him watch the videos while i feed him. Not all the time but on the particularly frustrating days I give in. I KNOW I am creating a monster. sometimes he clamps his mouth shut and stares at the dvd player until i give in, but it works!

same here, I hate it. My DS started by closing his mouth and pushing my hand with the spoon away and whining but once I put the tv on he had a distraction and would willingly open his mouth each time. During the warmer days I would feed him outside which he liked also.

Re: Feeding my 7 mth old is a nightmare
Uh, my DS (6.5 months) just started doing this. He is refusing to eat, but will take his bottle. SO upsetting because he had been doing great. Loved his cereal & veggies. I was thinking it is because he is teething & has a slight cold. I am praying it gets better. So unfortunatey no advice, but know you're not alone in your frustration!

Kristina will do this to me every once in a while.
What I do when she does this is open up a jar of the desserts... like 2 days ago, it was a cup of Peach Cobbler.
I would give her a good sized spoonful of her meat, and then I would literally just dunk the spoon inside the dessert (Peach Cobbler).... wipe off the excess, and let her have it. Then you would see her opening wide for the next spoonful of dessert, but it would be the meat, and we continued like that through the meal until she finished her meat!

Re: Feeding my 7 mth old is a nightmare
How did I forget to mention how odd my son is.....in general he loves veggies (peas, squash, carrots, sweet potato, mixed veggies, harvest veggies...anything vegetable) but he HATES fruit. Yes you read that - he HATES fruit. And forget about meat - we tried that a few times and he would start gagging noises. Has anyone tried yogurt with success?

Re: Feeding my 7 mth old is a nightmare
DS didn't want his cereal or fruit in the beginning (strangely, he loved most of his veggies so that's what he got initially).
I sang all kinds of silly, funny songs to him to get him to eat and did the choo-choo train thing to get him to open his mouth. Also experimented with the textures and found he didn't like his cereal too soupy.
Eventually he caught on and started eating well, but in the beginning he didn't want much to do with the "solid" food.

So what about doing it with a veggie? Or is he fighting those as well?
I haven't done yogurt like that tho, only b/c the yobaby is so thick.... it's like they used heavy cream to make it... it would be like a meal all on its own.

My son likes the veggies and the meat mixed in with veggies but also isnt crazy about fruit. he actually prefers the cereal when i dont mix in fruit. he is doing okay with yogurt. i wouldnt give him a gold star but it's not a failure like cereal with fruit mixed in!

Re: Feeding my 7 mth old is a nightmare
Nina does this almost EVERY feeding. We stopped cereal because she just would not have it. It is starting to get a little better but I also have to distract her while she eats with TV It is so frustrating and DH and I fight over who has to feed her LOL

He was fighting the veggie and cereal all weekend. So I tried 2 fruits (banana and applesauce) and no success their either.
I sent DH to get yo-baby yesterday afternoon to see if he tried and he came back with the yogurt drink He said their was NO yogurt. We tried the drink in a sippy cup and he drank a few sips. At least he tried it....

Yes, I do the singing also. Can I tell you how tired I am of the "Wheels on the Bus"
We haven't tried TV yet. (whole differet post) We haven't introduced TV yet and we were hoping to hold out until he was at least 1. DH will not want to give up on that rule but I am about to give up on that if that becomes the last resort.

Re: Feeding my 7 mth old is a nightmare
could your DS be fighting the feeding process? for example, my niece was off baby food by 9 months because she refused to be fed from a spoon. they started letting her self feed and she was fine.
If you have already started table foods maybe try cutting up a carrot really tiny and letting him self feed see if he likes that better.
Oh and baby einstein is a life saver in situations like this. Sometimes I put it on just to get DS dressed (he is an easy feeder...but diaper changes are a different story)

Re: Feeding my 7 mth old is a nightmare
My ds won't eat veggies. He only eats bannana (things mixed with bannan), peaches and pears. I mix those with cereal and he eats it 2x a day. I had to keep trying dif foods till i found one he would eat. It took 2 months but we found the magic foods. Now he will eat anything I cut up and put in front of him but it was a long hard road to get here.
ETA: ds has no teeth he just gums all his food even chicken nuggets.
