Feeling the baby is the only thing keeping me going
I know I've posted about this before--but I'm just beyond my limit of frustration and need to vent...
I'm convinced that the sciatica I have is MUCH worse than "typical" pregnancy sciatica. I cry at LEAST once a day. I broke down at my chiropractor's office when he told me, for the 100th time, that he's treated "about a thousand pregnant women, and you're only the 2nd that hasn't responded at all to treatment". I'm tired of hearing it.
I'm tired of roadblocks. First, I went through he** to even GET pregnant--now I can't even enjoy my pregnancy because I can't sleep for more than 2 hours at a time??!!! Seriously, what did I do in my past life??!!!!
I'm going to see if it's safe for me to get cortisone injections while pregnant. I literally can't live with this pain anymore. I had to make a 15 minute drive this morning, and I had to pull over in a parking lot 5 minutes into my trip because the tears were streaming down my face from the intense pain.
Sorry this is so long--I think DH is tired of hearing me whine (though I KNOW he understands) and I'm just at the end of the line. The only thing that keeps me going these days is feeling my kick. It's the ONLY thing I have right now that makes me at least somewhat happy.

Re: Feeling the baby is the only thing keeping me going
I can only imagine how you feel. When pain is that bad, it's just unbearable. I have back, neck and sciatic issues in the past so i do understand.
I hate to suggest anything b/c I feel you probably have tried it all. But have you tried acupuncture? I found it really helpful.
I am so sorry that the pain is so unbearable, so soon to boot!
What does your OB say? Can they give you anything?

Oh Beth, I am so sorry you are in so much pain! My sciatica comes and goes, however I'm getting super uncomfortable b/c is sitting so low.
What does your OB say about the Sciatica? Is there anything they can give you?

I tried acupuncture once. Because laying on my left side is very uncomfortable (even though the sciatica is in the right leg), I had to lay on my stomach. I wound up with a sore back and no relief in my leg.
My OB isn't very sympathetic--I think she's heard this "song and dance" before. I tried to tell her how awful this pain is, but she is of the mindset that the pain isn't bad enough to cause potential risk to the baby.
I would NEVER want to cause ANY harm to my baby--but I can tell you this--there is NO POSSIBLE WAY I'm going to get through 22 more weeks like this. I am just done.

I agree. I don't see how you could bear t hat sort of pain for 22 weeks. I really don't, so I do understand.
I wish I could suggest something but i know for me, the only thing that worked wonders is advil and we can't even take that. So it is very very frustrating! I wish your OB would hear you more, though...

Yes--my sciatic nerve on my right side. My chiropractor feels I have a herniated disc in my lower back (I have a history of those )
The pain is off the charts. It takes a lot to make me cry. But I seriously think I could go through natural childbirth with less pain. Not even exaggerating.

Nerve related pain is terrible, probably among the worst. So yes, childbirth might even be more tolerable.

I am going to try this next--the only reason I haven't done it yet because I know it's only a temporary fix. I would like to find a solution to the problem. I'm sure a massage would do me good, though.

Re: Feeling the baby is the only thing keeping me going
I feel your pain. I had horrible sciatica with my first pregnancy, and I was in Pharma Sales at the time and spent the entire day in the car driving...
If your Chiro can't help you, keep searching until you find someone who can!!! I was going to suggest mine in Farmingdale, but I remembered you don't live here.
Don't give up, I know it is terrible, but mine got a lot better in the end of the 2nd trimester.
Good Luck!!!

Do you go to Dr. Priestley? He was my chiropractor for 6 years, and the sole reason I had no back pain for the first time since I was 20 years old.
When I'm in NY next week, I plan on seeing him every day. I just know he'll be able to do something for me--and then I'll know I have to move back to NY for the next 5 months!

I am sorry for the crash, but I suffer from severe sciatica. The ONLY thing that works for me is swimming. I do about 200 laps of the breast stroke. I realize since you are pregnant you will not be able to do as many laps, but you might want to try doing a few and see if it works. It really did wonders for me and my sciatica has gotten so bad in the past that my legs have locked and I could not walk.
I hope this helps.

Yesssss!!!!! He saved my life!!!!
You may have to move back here for the rest of your pregnancy...
Make sure you see him when you are here, and maybe he can tell you exactly what adjustment you need and can write it down for your Doctor at home.

That's what it sounds like to me. Your symptoms and pain level sound really bad. What about getting in to see a pain specialist?

Re: Feeling the baby is the only thing keeping me going
I am so sorry you're in so much pain. I've had my own awful back issues in the past and went months on meds and meds that didn't help and finally had surgery, which helped tremendously. The cortisone shots did nothing for me. Well, the first time it gave me relief for awhile (two weeks or so) and when I went back for the second, it actually made the pain worse. Have you seen an orthopaedist, or just the chiropractor? I would highly recommend going to an orthopaedist that specializes in spinal issues. I don't know if they can give you anything, but they might be able to give you oral steroids. I recently went to the doctor for a bug bite and they said if it didn't get better, they'd give me steroids, which are safe for me and baby. When I have a back flare up, my doc puts me on steroids for a week and 9/10 times it cures me. It's worth asking about. I hope you feel better!

I'm sorry you are in so much pain. I was also going to suggest acupuncture - one session is probably not enough when you are suffering from this amount of pain. I hope you find something that gives you relief.

Re: Feeling the baby is the only thing keeping me going
I totally undestand what you are going through!!! I had sciatica before I got pregnant and it came back so severely when I was pregnant. I couldn't sit, stand, drive and the worst was that I couldn't even lay down!!!! It hurt so much to lay down that I couldn't sleep either for more than two hours and then I would have to walk around for about an hour and ice it or heat it. Luckily it only lasted this intensely for 8 weeks and then when I was 29-30 weeks it let up some so that it was at least bearable. I tried everything though and just like you I cried everyday. Chriropractor, acupuncture, stretches, warm baths and massage - and I was walking. My OB had little compassion too, thinking I was just complaining. I think the acupuncucture helped take the edge off sometimes but what really helped was when I got into my 3rd trimester the chiropractor started to do lower back sonograms. I had to get it approved from my OB because some don't approve of it but it helped immediately. I don't know if that was just coincidence but that is when I started to feel better. It didn't help either that my placenta was in my back and dd was constantly just laying on the placenta I hope things get better. I still remember the pain - probably because I still have the sciatica.

Re: Feeling the baby is the only thing keeping me going
So sorry you are going through this. I had a herniated disc in my lower back a couple of years ago and I could barely function for months. The pain is just indescribable and no one understands it unless they have gone through it.
One thing that I want to let you know is that I started at a chiropractor and only got minimal relief- as it got worse and worse he *eventually* sent me for an MRI and to a nuerologist- it was a herniated disc, clear as day on the film.
So, I was put on steriods, they helped for the week was on them, but the pain came right back when I finished them.
Long story short- the next step was a nuerosurgeon and based upon how much pain I was in, he operated within weeks. Turns out, the herniated part of the disc had actually broken off outside the disc and was pushing against my nerve.
No amount of meds or adjustments can fix that, and they couldn't tell until they went in and took it out.
The day after the surgery, I was bopping around like a normal person again, after being a miserable hunchback for months.
Not sure if this will help you, but it may be something for you to look at for the future.
I hope you feel better soon!
