Female skier Sports Illustrated cover- too provocative?
I'm wondering if anyone else saw this - it's an article about the cover of Sports Illustrated that features Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn. Article
Apparently people are very up in arms because they say that this picture is "provocative" and objectifies her. Now, after reading the article, I can understand it seems unfair that only about 4% of the covers feature woman and primarily they are not action shots, but really, does anyone else feel like calling this picture provocative is pushing it a little?
The only thing I see that seems like it's not just her normal get up is that her hair is done and she doesn't have a helmet. She is a beautiful woman - what is wrong with that?

I just had this conversation with my DH the other night. I REALLY don't see the big deal at all. It doesn't seem provacative to me.

it's fine, she is a skier and that is the position they are in while skiing. These people have to get their minds out of the gutter.

Re: Female skier Sports Illustrated cover- too provocative?
I was just reading this article before I came to LIF.
I am still sitting here scratching my head...
I don't get it at all. She is wearing the outfit she would wear while doing her sport. She is in a position that she would use while doing her sport. How is this provocative? I don't see it at all.
Just goes to show you how over-sensitive people have become.

Re: Female skier Sports Illustrated cover- too provocative?
She's a very attractive woman, posing for a cover of a magazine that is about sports, geared for men, and has an annual swim suit edition......did people expect she'd be wearing a poncho and coke bottle glasses?
Not provocative considering the covers we've seen from SI before....she looks good.

I don't see anything wrong with it but I know someone who would (but she finds everything offensive). To me it's an posed action shot.

She likes it in da butt.
I don't see it that way either. I'm starting to hate the semantics about the PC problems with photos, art, words, etc. So uptight.

She's in a skiing outfit. In a position used for her sport.

I find the swimsuit issue much more provacative than this cover.

Re: Female skier Sports Illustrated cover- too provocative?
I think what they have a problem with is the fact that even female professional athletes are portrayed as sexual beings, rather than being highlighted for their athleticism.

Re: Female skier Sports Illustrated cover- too provocative?
I don't think it's provocative as much as it just looks silly.
Granted, that's how you downhill ski...but I still wouldn't want to "pose" like that for a cover.

Re: Female skier Sports Illustrated cover- too provocative?
nothing wrong with that photo, if she was spread eagle with her skies in the air and blowing kisses then i would say their is an issue.
WTH? look at how many males go on that cover with makeup/hair done.

They said it, not me, "Over the last 60 years researchers have shown that about 4% of all SI covers have portrayed women.
When females are featured on the cover of SI, they are more likely than not to be in sexualized poses and not in action–and the most recent Vonn cover is no exception."
I think whoever wrote that article needs to let out her pantsuit...
Edited: Part of the quote from the article got truncated

If she was wearing a bikini and skiing, well that might objectify her, but she is wearing what an athelete who does her sport wears, its fine. People are too sensitive!

Perhaps if she were posing in a bikini and her skis. I see nothing provocative about the cover. The Swimsuit edition - that's another story.......
