Fence Etiquette?

Let's say you put up a big above ground pool. You now have to put up a fence (by law). Is it the norm to expect that your neighbors with who you share the property lines with chip in for your fence?

Re: Fence Etiquette?

No. It was your decision to put in a pool and to fence the area - your cost.

No, it's your responsiblity. However, both my neighbor and I were thinking of replacing the fence that ran between our property and we split the cost.

No. Also u have to give them the nice side, or so I was told because someone can climb from the other side.

Re: Fence Etiquette?

I don't understand asking the neighbor to split the cost of a fence. If they say no, your still getting the fence. Why would they pay?

Re: Fence Etiquette?

I live in a subdivision with covenants...and not only do I have to pay for a fence 100% on my own, but I have to get my neighbor's approval. I guess it depends, but I never heard of an automatic $$ split.

Re: Fence Etiquette?

The people next to us were getting a fence and approached DH one day while he was cutting the lawn...they were trying to get him to agree to pay for half of it and I can 100% say that it really ticked us off!

Ok thanks...I thought I was crazy because our neighbor approached us with this request and I thought it was pretty cute that he expected us to chip in for HIS fence. Chat Icon

Nope, whoever put the pool up is responsible for the fence.

I know right! For a second I had to doubt myself and ask...well maybe there's some kind of unspoken neighborly fence etiquette that I don't know about and it would be rude of me to say no.

But then I'm like, well, he HAS to put up the fence anyway because of his pool... so what if I say no? He has to put it up anyway!

Re: Fence Etiquette?

Some neighbors discuss it beforehand and chip in. We are paying for our fence alone - BUT - our neighbor keeps asking us when we are putting it up because he is so excited for it. The people behind him put one up - so this would be the last piece to his fence. He makes out in the deal. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That's funny - our neighbor asked us if we wanted to chip in for a new fence (which we both wanted). Then he installed a pool.

Didn't bother me since we were going to get a new fence anyway. Now I realized it was bc of the pool.

Re: Fence Etiquette?

Most fences do not sit exactly on property line, ours is about a foot inside the line. I think if anyone chooses to put up a fence it is their fence and entirely their expense.

Look at it this way - you get to choose exactly what you want.

Re: Fence Etiquette?

I see no reason why a neighbor can't ask you to chip in....My parents have always done this with their neighbors and some of my friends have also......

The best part is OUR property already HAS a fence where our properties meet! Chat Icon But he has to put up a taller one, and of course surround the rest of his property.

Re: Fence Etiquette?

I think there is an unspoken fence neighbor etiquette. If the neighbor who puts the fence up approaches you about style, making sure you like it, it would be nice to offer the 50%. It's not necessary, but it is neighborly.
