Sometime both parties want a new fence but neither can afford the whole thing, I see no reason why you can't say "hey we were thinking of a new fencce do you want in?" Nothing wrong with that, then you both share equally in the decision....

Ok thanks...I thought I was crazy because our neighbor approached us with this request and I thought it was pretty cute that he expected us to chip in for HIS fence.
Unless he's going to let you use his pool all summer- put a gate from your yard to his!
