Fertilization report...UPDATE
They retrieved 10 yesterday and I just got the call...none of them fertilized. How the hell does this happen? This cycle was going so well... It wasn't my dr I spoke with and he said it could be egg quality. This is my 3rd ivf. My first I didn't respond well, my 2nd was a bfp but ended in miscarriage at 10 weeks due to turners syndrome, now this 3rd one nothing?? How do they determine if it's egg quality? Are there tests they can do? If I never had my miscarriage I would probably be a lot more upset but nothing compares to that so I am not as bad as I thought but still. Maybe it's just not in my cards... So, I had my appt today and he was shocked to see to say the least. We have determined that 1) the lupron doesn't work well with me and we will no longer go that route and 2) he believes my terrible cold had a lot to do with the quality of my eggs this cycle. He basically told me that this was the oddest thing he has ever seen (gee, thanks!). He did a blood test to test egg quality to be on the safe side but he believes that will come back normal. He wants to do another fresh cycle and mimic the one where i got pregnant over the summer. I do have frozen but he wants to maximize my chances but ultimately he said what! iter i want to do. At the end of the appt I said so Im not a lost cause and his response was, not at all. it may take you a little longer but we will get there. so hopefully the future holds something brighter and maybe I am meant to have xmas baby instead!

Re: Fertilization report...
I am soooooo sorry. I would call and speak to your regular md. Maybe he can have some answers. Are you dealing with male & female infertility?I'm sorry you are going through all this.

Re: Fertilization report...
First of all....I am so very sorry...this TTC is just not fair sometimes.
As for poor egg quality being the cause, that is possible, but it is also possible that your protocol is to blame, the lab or issues that have to do with your partners sperm. I would consider doing DNA testing on your DH's sperm to see if he has some issue..in particular..a balance translocation issue which could be the problem. I would also look carefully at your protocol. For most poor responders, a microdose lupron or estrogen priming protocol is thought to be best as opposed to say a long Lupron protocol which contains a lot of LH which is not believed to be that good for poor responders.

I'm so sorry....
As far as what my doctor has discussed with me (Dr Davis @ Cornell) you can't judge egg quality until you have an embryo. During your 2nd IVF, were the quality of your embryos good? Do you have MF? Did you have ICSI?
As the pp said it could be poor laboratory technique or just the wrong protocol for you. During an IVF cycle, eggs mature according to what combination of meds are pumped into your system. And unfortunately it's all trial and error for the most part..... Me, I'm a poor responder and I was put on the long Lupron protocol and my whole cycle turned out to be a total disaster as well. I know exactly what you are going through and I'm so so sorry.......

Re: Fertilization report...
Thanks for the responses ladies.. I have some mf with unexplained. The first two rounds there was fertilization. This was all on bc pill. This time I did Lupron, for the whole time actually. I wonder if that has something to do with it. I don't know what to do. I have 10k insurance so I hope this didn't eat all of it up. Would insurance be able to tell me what I have left?

As soon as the insurance company gets billed, they can definitely tell you what is left. I would try calling and see if the claim went through already.

Thanks..
Yes ICSI on all of them. I wonder how long till AF shows... I wonder if the dr will think a 4th ivf is worth it.

Re: Fertilization report...
I am sorry...it could be sperm issues or immune issues....
I had 5 IVF's all with low fertilalization...we were told it was a sperm issue (we are dealing with severe MF) I had a gut feeling there was more to this than sperm issues and decided to see Dr B...we found out I have very high NK cells and few other minor issues with my immune system. DR B contributes them to the low fertilization...
if you haven't yet, I would go to Dr B and get tested, that might be your answer....
I am sorry again...

Re: Fertilization report...
I am a poor responder due to PCOS, age and poor egg quality. I have had countless IVF cycles but can tell you that for DS#1: IVF transfer 1 - BFN IVF transfer 2 - BFP wound up m/c IVF transfer 3 w/PGD - BFP (healthy happy DS)
TTC #2 IVF cycle 1 - cancelled IVF cycle 2 - retrieval batched for PGD (only 3 fertilized) IVF cycle 3 - cancelled IVF cycle 4 w/PGD - BFN
Just got AF so Monday we start again...cant afford PGD again so no picking and choosing the good ones.
Dont give up. Having poor egg quality just means struggling to implant that one good egg (and waiting for our bodies to produce it).

I agree with Classic also. I would also suggest reading Randine Lewis's The Fertility Solution as well as doing acupuncture. There are many dietary changes, herbal solutions etc. Change your whole life for 3 months and then do another cycle. GL

Re: Fertilization report...
I've been thinking about you a lot since your post. I just feel so upset when I think about it. I hope you got some answers from your doctor.
Just wanted to say we're all here for you. Take the time you need and then maybe it's time to go to a few consults with different doctors. Your doctor might still be the one, but maybe give yourself an opportunity to get some new perspective.
