Filing unemployment?
Sadly I lost my job today which I was at for 14 years. The company was bought out and my position eliminated. I am getting a severance package, but can I still claim unemployment? I've never dealt with this so I am unsure how it works.

Re: Filing unemployment?
Yes you absolutely can. I got a severance package when a job was eliminated, it does not affect your ability to collect unemployment. You can register online for unemployment I believe.
I'm so sorry this happened!

Yes, you can. Once you file they ask if you're receiving severance but it doesn't change your eligibility, just when you start receiving unemployment.

Filing unemployment?
So sorry also!
Pay close attention to your health insurance so you know what you have and for how long before filing for COBRA, or not.

That's good because Cobra is expensive. Sorry about your job!

I'm so sorry! I'm a firm believer that with regards to things like this, it all happens for a reason and that it will open up a door to something better!

Re: Filing unemployment?
So sorry to hear that. You can still file for unemployment, but I believe that there is a delay in receiving benefits until your package has been paid out.

This is correct. Receiving severance doesn't impact whether or not you get unemployment, just when it starts to kick in. So sorry this happened to you -- hopefully something better will come along soon!

Thank you, if my severance is paid in a lump sum do you know how that affects things?

Re: Filing unemployment?
If the lump sum is paid to you within 30 days after you are let go you will need to speak to an unemployment rep to figure out when you can begin to file. For example if you get 3 months of severence in a lump sum that is greater than the weekly unemployment amount, you will need to wait 3 months before you can file. This is the new rule that started last year I think.
