Finally got a diagnosis...

I've been getting terrible pain in my leg whenever I run.

Well, I finally bit the bullett and saw a doctor. I have shin splints.

I have to get an x-ray tomorrow to see if there is any damage to my bone, then the doctor has to determine how damaged the muscle is.

I can't run for at least two weeksChat Icon Chat Icon

I am really upset. And overwhelmed. Now I have to see the doc twice a week (hey, what's another apointment, rightChat Icon )

This is wwhat's been preventing me to relaly push harder and get past this lull I've been in on the treadmill.

I guess this is just a pity post. And, to ask if anyone else had this and fully recovered.

I'm so sorry! I had shin splints years ago and, although painful, they did heal completely and I was able to run again with no pain in about 6 wks. Chat Icon

I had them and they healed and I ran again. I rode a bike since it was no impact and I couldn't run. It hurt a little but it was before i was going to do a fitness competition so I didn't care.

I have them on and off. The right sneakers are critical! Also, cross training, lower body strength training, and stretching has made a HUGE difference. You may also want to see a physical therapist...there are ways to tape up the shin to prevent the muscle from pulling away from the bone anymore.

I know how frustrating this is, I was side lined 5 weeks before the NYC marathon in '06 due to achilles tendonitis....this was after 15 weeks of training. I ran very light, and cross trainined and ran the marathon. You will run again, listen to the docs and cross train! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks ladies!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

It is assuring to know that I will be running again soon!

I have to go to the physical therapist twice a week for the next 6 weeks. He said that he will do some stretching of the muscle and strengthening it.

I do strength training twice a week, so I'm covered in that respect. I'm just kind of bummed still.

BUT, now maybe I'll get addicted to biking Chat Icon
