Now the hardest part is having my inlaws accept the fact that there is a problem....all they keep saying is he does not have a disability, he is just a slow learner. There is nothing wrong with him and why cant you accept that...why are you trying to find something wrong with him....is what I get from them
Grrrrr!!!!!
They make me soooo mad!!
Diane - don't let them get to you. You are their mommy. And you know what is best for them. The positive thing is that it was detected very early and so many things can be done nowadays

Re: Finally got some answers.....
You did a great thing to get him tested and he will be ok! As for the inlaws, I would come outright and tell them not to question you or what the specialists are saying.

Finding out this soon is the best thing. You can now chart a course of action that he can thrive from. Early Intervention is such a wonderful tool. Educate yourself and be Christopher's biggest asset/advocate. The Mom's at my center who are proactive with EI always have kids that get the most from it and improve so so much. Good Luck this is such a hard thing to grasp

Re: Finally got some answers.....
our friends' son was just diagnosed with PPD too and like others have said - early diagnosis is key. She is so happy that she just bought a house in Suffolk, b/c Suffolk seems to have better services than Nassau (so my friend says) - so that's good for your little one too!

It seems thats how the older generation works.....when we were trying to find out what happened with Kerri the grandparents were all telling us to leave it alone.......I know thats their way of coping with things. They are scared and of the mentality of what you don't know can't hurt you

Re: Finally got some answers.....
As a teacher, I think you've already taken a HUGE step in the right direction. I've seen soooooo many parents who would rather not deal with things like this, and would rather "let it run its course". But the fact that you recognized that there was a problem, and now you're facing it head-on, is HUGE and will help him be as successful as he can be!!!
We know SO MUCH MORE about PDD than we did even 10 years ago--your son will be in good hands. Stay strong--you are a fantastic mom, and you will learn lots of strategies to help your son be independent and high-functioning.
I've worked with lots of kids on the spectrum, and early intervention really IS the key, as many others have already said. I'm not sure how old your son is, but you've done a great thing for him. Please keep us updated on how he's doing!!!!

Diane - sending you hugs
Try to take some comfort in the fact that you did and are doing the best possible things for him.
Definitely let it out.

Re: Finally got some answers.....
EI helps so very much. My friend has 3 children - one with a PDD diagnosis and 2 with an autism diagnosis. Her daughter was diagnosed with PDD at 14 months and she will be entering kindergarten - mainstreamed - in September at 5 years old, so there are lots of success stories out there.

No one in this whole wide world knows what's best for him but YOU! Don't let them get to you...you are an amazing mom...fight, fight, fight for that little boy and brush anyone that gives you a hard time out of your way.

Re: Finally got some answers.....
I'm sorry. Of course you will get stronger (you sound strong already) and handle everything on his behalf but how heartbreaking!! I really feel for you. We've gone through some things with my oldest and what is "different" about him so I know those feelings as a parent. I know a little bit about PDD but not much about the services he will need, I'm glad to hear so many other posters talk about the positives of EI.
