take the money from the d*mn school districts.

Wow- really? This statement blows my mind. What do you mean? Do we not get as much service from the public school system as we do from the volunteer firefighters?
My father was FDNY, my mother served on the school board, so I like to think that I may be on both sides of this fence. But I can't imagine at all what you might be talking about.
A 55K sports car, for volunteer firefighters, is more important than after school sports, or music activities for the communities children?

i'm talking about taxes. i mean why are people so concerned with the couple of hundred dollars they are spending on the fire department when they are spending thousands upon thousands on the school districts. i feel the schools get to much money. i think the fire departments should get more of the money and the schools should get less. our fire department does alot of stuff for the community. i know anything we put into the district will come back to us ten fold.
i dont feel the same way about the school district. ( i'm not going to get into why i feel that way.)

Really? think it's nuts to say that the FD should get more $$$ than the schools. There are 12 schools in my district- 1 FD. How does that make sense?
Like I said, I am pro firman. That's not what this post is about. I have never seen a school frivilously spend that kind of $$$ on a race car.
The race car, to the FD, is entertainmet. A "thank you" for volunteering to serve.
Fine- if that's your aruement.
But to take $$ away from schools?
Do you think maybe we should cut music Ed so that the FD can have a new indoor bowling alley?
Please.
It's a club. Not my responsibility.

Re: Fire Department on LI (long)

I just want to add, in a final note- that IF we paid these firefighters, then our taxes would be higer. BUT as long as were are taxpayers, we have every right to argue about how our money is spent.
That is what gives you the right to vote down school budgets. Why don't we have the option to vote down theirs?
At the very east- we have a right to piss and moan about it.

Re: Fire Department on LI (long)

those of you worried about 55,000

here's how it breaks down.

If there is 35,000 houses in the average community thats $1.57 per year your household is individually contributing to the fd racing car. Please spare me. Give up one coffee (not even a latte) a year and you just made back your $1.57.

Re: Fire Department on LI (long)

i don;t live in farmingville, but i used to live in south hempstead. where is that you ask? well its the town with the million dollar firehouse. thats right, its about 6 blocks long, inbetween baldwin and rockville centre. yet, it has its own fire house. with one in baldwin less then 2 minutes away. it sickens me that they spent all that money to renovate the firehouse.

not that fire men should be in abject squalor, but whats wrong with the simple firehouse? especailly in a town with no fires.

but to give props where props are due, they were at my parents house in seconds, literally, when we had to take my grandma to the hospital, and were nothing but nice to us.

what makes me laugh is that people CAN AND DO give props to volunteer firemen despite the fact that they do not want to FUND their leisure activities

as i think i said in another post on this thread...My Ex AND a good friend of mine were both volunteer fire fighters..

I commend the work they did...

But it is a job that they volunteered for..

I don't think that i should have to support their "fun, social, bonding events"

I AM a civil servant, it is MY JOB...Highly doubtful i am going to get a 55K car anytime soon Chat Icon

i completely agree, they do an incredible job, and they race, and every freakin person on the force has an explorer or exdepition.

i will give more movey for better equiipment, new trucks whatever, but not for race cars.

From Newsday: "New York City owns one heavy rescue truck with specialized rescue tools for each of its five boroughs, plus a single spare for use citywide. Fully equipped, each can cost $750,000 or more.

Long Island fire departments have 146 of them."

Are things like this really necessary?

As for having first hand experience with them. I have experience with paid NYFD. And while they have extra benefits and fun things to do, they have nothing like this.

Heavy rescue trucks mostly get used in car accidents - I believe they carry Hurst tools (to cut the car), those huge lights to illuminate the scene, hydraulics for stabilizing a vehicle that's not on all four wheels, etc.

I'd say that's necessary. I've been in and responded to quite a few mva's myself and those trucks are a Godsend.

I'd be very surprised if FDNY doesn't have scores of heavy rescue vehicles.

I'm not surprised. My brother in-law is a Lieutenant in the FDNY. They don't have as many as you think. Plus the fire engines and trucks are garbage.

How can you compare spending money on education (and teachers) and spending money on a race car? Chat Icon Where, in your opinion, are the schools wasting money? I think we all appreciate what the volunteer firefighters do, but that doesn't mean tax dollars should be spent on racing cars.
