First Birthday party-- cake or cupcakes?
I'm torn about what to do for DD's first b-day. I am positive that I want to make something for DD, I want that to be the tradition that I make her cake & decorate it. So I could always make a small cake for her and then order a cake from Costco or somewhere for all the guests.
But I do love the thought of cupcakes too, they're so cute, easy to serve and yummy. I could make the giant cupcake cake and decorate it and have her blow out the candle on it, and then everyone would get their own cupcake. Thoughts either way? There will be about 40 people there, if it matters.

I prefer cake personally especially if adults are involved.

Cake if it's mainly adults.
Cupcakes if there are kids.
Cupcakes are easier if you're out because there is no cutting & you can just pass them.

The party is at a hall at the park, so we're not going to be at a house. Would you say cupcakes or a cake then?

Re: First Birthday party-- cake or cupcakes?
I HATE bakery cake myself, but i always get it cause you have to have it i'm told. If i do get it, i get it for WAY less people then i have coming. LIke for 40 people, i get it for 20.
But for Dd's 1st birthday, we are doing a cupcake theme, i'm getting a cupcake pull away cake, it's looks like a cake, but it's cupcakes. Adults or not, every one loves CUPCAKES!
I am also having cookies and fruit.
Again, totally up to you!!! It's your memories and your DD's party
If i wasn't having a cupcake theme, i would do a small cake, cupcakes and some cookies and fruit.

I did both.
I ordered a cake from BJ's for the adults and did milk free cup cakes for the kids (my DD is allergic)

Re: First Birthday party-- cake or cupcakes?
I had the best of both worlds.....I made a cake out of cupcakes. And then I made a cake in the shape of a cupcake. I was all over the place!

Re: First Birthday party-- cake or cupcakes?
I did both. The adults had cake & the kids (inluding DS) had cupcakes. We had a cup cake tower, so it made for a nice display.

Re: First Birthday party-- cake or cupcakes?
I made both. I bought the King size cupcake pan which holds 6 and makes them huge (cupcakes on steroids ) Then I made a cupcake shaped cake with a Wilton pan. Guests ate both. I enjoyed making them and thought they turned out cute.

I am making a butterfly "cake" - which is actually cupcakes iced together to look like a cake. That will be for her, and the kids. I am going to get a sheet cake for the rest.

My friend just started her own "baking" business. She's AMAZING!!! The entire cupcake, including the flowers, was edible and delicious. Unfortunately I'm out in Putnam County - probably a bit far to pick up cupcakes

Re: First Birthday party-- cake or cupcakes?
I was all over the place. I made a #1 cake and cupcakes. I also made a small round cake just for DS.
The cupcakes I just frosted and then put sprinkles and a cherry on them. I made them for the kids and I think the adults ate more cupcakes!!

OK, this sounds like exactly the type of thing I'd ideally like to do. How the heck do you do it though
