First Birthday party questions

Where did you have your babies first b-day parties?

This may be a bit personal, but my DH insists this is common practice and I absolutely disagree, so I need other experiences here. When you have thrown a party for one of your children, if they were given cash, did you let the baby/child keep it (in an acct, etc.) or did you automatically put it towards the expenses of the party? I absolutely believe it is the childs money and it is stealing if someone gives it to them, but then it is taken by the parent. However, my DH says this is what most people do and did this for my twins Baptism (which I'm still upset about). What did you do?

Re: First Birthday party questions

Older son we had at a VFW hall.

Younger son we had in our backyard (June).

I would NEVER, EVER use my child's gifted bday $ to pay for their party. EVER. That was MY choice to throw the party, the child shouldn't have to pay for it.

Any $$ my children get for their birthdays, Christmas, any holiday...goes either into their own bank account, their piggy bank (small amounts), or sometimes my older son will save his $$ to buy something he really wants. He is saving for a Nintendo DS (but DH and I will pay with our own money and put his $$ in his bank account).

Everyone has their own view on this. For me, I put it in an account for her.

Re: First Birthday party questions

I had dds party at a restaurant but it was small. All cash gifts went into her account. DH and I chose to have the party for her, so we felt responsible for the cost. This way we start to build up her college fund.

same as pp.

everything he gets goes into his own account. aside for what we will put away for his 529, DH said he wants to give him something for his down payment for a house later on. DS is not even 1 yet and he has 10k to his name already Chat Icon

Re: First Birthday party questions

I have very strong feelings about this based on my own personal history, so forgive me if I'm harsh but ABSOLUTELY 100% THAT MONEY IS FOR YOUR DC - NOT to pay for the party. I think that is so wrong and I agree that it's stealing from your child.

This was done to me my whole life and I'm very resentful for it.

I believe if you can't afford to throw a party then you don't throw one. It's not like they even remember their first birthday.

I give bonds instead of cash so this can't happen.

All of DS monetary gifts go to him. I put the cash and checks in the bank - and if he gets gift cards I use them to buy him toys or clothes or a bigger ticket item.

Re: First Birthday party questions

I agree with you that all gifts should go to DC. But I know that when my ILs had a party for DH and BILs confirmation that they used the cash gifts to pay for the party and each boy got like $50. I agree with a PP who said if you can't afford to have the party then you simply don't have one. Or you scale it back majorly to what you can afford.

Re: First Birthday party questions

We are having Kaydyn's first birthday at a restaurant.

For her christening we took all the money and put it into a savings account and a college savings plan. Unfortunately my DH lost his job in Sept and hasn't been able to find a job yet so we are putting most of the expense of her party on credit cards and then hoping to pay it back with some of the gifts she receives. We do intend to put it back in her account once we receive our tax refund later in the year.

My sister almost always used the gifts the kids rec'd as money toward the parties/events etc.

Re: First Birthday party questions

we had a huge 1st bday for DD at a hall. about 100 people. she got a lot of $ and bonds that were all put in an account for her. Ive con tinued to deposit $ shes gotten since then (shes 2.5 now) and I never withdraw from her account.

IMO...its your choice to have a bday party for DC and you shouldnt use gift $ to cover expenses for the party.JMO.
