First FMLA...then child care leave
So i am due March 1, 2011...i have been on bedrest since Oct and on a medical leave for restoration of health and able to get disability thru the UFT...
HR connect said once my baby is born, I am still entitiled to my 6 weeks/8wks mat leave, the the other 6 weeks for my FMLA...after that, my medical ins ends and i am on a child care leave (I want to take the rest of the school year off)...
My question is, anyone that took a child care leave and carried the health insurance for your family...what did you do about insurance? I dont think i can go under my husbands insurance in the middle of the year...COBRA is waaaay too expensive...i would be taking a child care leave around the 3rd or 4th week of May so i would need health insurance for my family from May-Aug...I am planning on returning to work in Sept if i can find out how to make this work...otherwise i will have to go back to work TIA

you *may* be able to jump onto your DH's insurance in the middle of the year..sometimes they consider the reasons to be a "qualifying life event," which you would have to prove.
I would investigate that avenue first and foremost.

I could be wrong but look in to somethign with teh city called SLOAC or SLOC that extends your benefits

i will look into it...since it would only be for 3 months, i am not sure they would approve for a short amount of time...the take $$ out of his check for medical ins...whereas the city doesnt take anything from my check...financially works out better...ho hum...feel like the NYC DOE punishes us for having babies :(

I will look into SLOAC...although, i am not sure if that is what i have right now since i am on a medical leave and getting disability thru the UFT...have to find out about this.... thanks!

Having a baby if a qualifying life changing event. After I had DD we were able to both move to DH's insurance even though it wasn't open enrollment.

How long did you stay on your husbands insurance? Did you go back to work after and remain on husbands insurance or go back to yours?

Tyou can get an extenstion now but that is only for a few months then you will need to pay cobra. This is what my friend is doing now. If you can you should try to get on your DHs ins
I believe my friend is paying close to 2000 a month for 4 people ( her hubs and 2 kids)

I can get an extension after the FMLA ends? I am estimating my FMLA to end around the 3rd week in May...i just need it extended thru Aug...then will go back to work in Sept...i have to go back to work...by Aug, we will be dead broke
