first trimester spotting - btdt? - *UPDATED*

i'm 8 weeks and it just started yesterday afternoon. it's very light brown.i saw my gyn today and she said "people who bleed are more likely to miscarry"... that made me feel worse. i can't get in for a sono til tomorrow morning. didn't sleep at all last night b/c i was up worrying. anyone experience this and everything turned out ok? what could even cause it??

UPDATE: just had a sono this morning and everything looked fine (strong HB and measuring on target). the sonographer said she didn't see any blood in my uterus and it was probably just a fluke, maybe some leftover implantation blood.

just wanted to thank everyone for their support yesterday!

Re: first trimester spotting - btdt?

I don't know why told you that -- that was just very unprofessional of her and will cause you undue stress!

I had some spotting in my first trimester and I'm almost 29 wks.

Plenty of people have spotting and do NOT miscarry. As long as the spotting does not change to bright red and accompanied by cramping....you should be fine.

Re: first trimester spotting - btdt?

that was a really stupid thing of her to say. Actually for me... it would even be grounds to not go back there again. I just hate offices that say things like this.

Anyway... I spotted around 7 or 8 weeks. then at around the 12 to 13 week mark, I full on bled red.... and then spotted for about a week or more after that.

I'm almost 26 weeks pregnant now... and so far all looks good.

that gyno is a jerk for saying that. she certainly lacks bedside manner. there's no use scaring you more than the spotting already has. And it's not true for everyone. I had a mc back in January 2010 and I NEVER bled a single drop. No spotting, NOTHING. This pregnancy I had 2 instances...and so far so good.

ETA: my doc said its normal to occur in the 1st tri

I agree....did they do any bloodwork on you? With my 1st pregnancy I had low progestrone..and that was the reasoning behind spotting.

Re: first trimester spotting - btdt?

I bled alot when I was 6 weeks, at two different times. My blood was bright red and it was alot. I convinced myself that I was miscarrying, but when I went for the sono, we saw the hearbeat and everything was fine. Brown blood is old blood, which is better than red. I'm sure you'll be fine...it's alot more common to bleed than I thought

Re: first trimester spotting - btdt?

What your Dr told you is completely not true!! I know you are worried but please don't believe what she told you. And if I were you, I would be looking for a new doctor!! The only thing my Dr told me that should concern me is if it was blood red, like a period. Not to worry too much if I had brown spotting.

With that said, I spotted for my 1st PG. During the 1st tri up to 12 weeks or so. Then again around 28/30 weeks. I was put on bed rest at that time for 2 days. After that I had a normal delivery.

This pregnancy I spotted again on and off up to 8 weeks. Nothing has happened since. Chat Icon

Re: first trimester spotting - btdt?

thanks for your responses :)

she did a beta but i don't think she checked progesterone, although i was being seen by an RE until a week ago and he was checking my progesterone early on... unfortunately he is on vacation this week otherwise i would have gone to him

i agree totally unprofessional but since my RE is away i am going back to her office tomorrow for the sono to make sure everything is ok, and after that i'm done with her!

eta- ange my first loss was due to trisomy 16, nothing we could have done unfortunately

I have no idea why she would say that to you - first tri bleeding happens to a LOT of women and it doesn't necessarily mean you are going to miscarry.

I would suggest finding a new OB, to be quite honest. They are there to keep you calm and healthy - not to cause you stress and worry. My OB actually said to me, "It's my job to make sure you stay calm, so that you grow a healthy baby."

Your dr. doesn't sound very professional at all. I had bleeding with my first pregnancy and I've already had it twice with this pregnancy. I now have a healthy 1.5 year old and with this pregnancy I've seen/heard the hb twice already!

Spotting can happen and be nothing at all. If I were you I'd probably find a new dr. who has a little more compassion.

I can't believe your doctor would say something like that. I would find another doctor.
I was having light brown spotting at around 8 weeks pregnant. I went to the doctor and I had partial placenta previa, but now I'm 10 weeks it's clearing up.
Don't worry. It's perfectly normal to have spotting during your first trimester. I'm so sorry your doctor made such a stupid comment like that. Feel Better. Chat Icon

That's horrible for your dr to say!

I had spotting in the first and second semester - on and off - and now have a very active 15 month old!!!

My dr's response is that it's common and many times they aren't sure what's causing it.

Re: first trimester spotting - btdt?

That is awful for your doctor to say! I didnt have first trimester spotting but I had a small amount of spotting at 14.5 weeks. My OB said to just take it easy and not to worry unless it turned bright red and/or was accompanied by cramping, then to call back and possibly go to the ER (as it was a Saturday). I think first tri bleeding is a lot more common.

Just this morning I brought up the spotting again to my OB and she said spotting during first and second tri is very common and not to worry unless it is red with cramping. I know every doctor is different but even if yours was more concerned I think there are more comforting ways to get her point across especially in a situation that is obviously stressing you out.

FWIW, I was never thrilled with my original OB and switched practices at 11w after one more "situation" pushed me over the edge. I am SO SO SO SO happy I made the switch and love my new OB. Just throwing that out there as well ...

Re: first trimester spotting - btdt?

I just went through this last week/this week. Sunday (8w exactly) i started spotting...Monday night it was bright red - it had previously been brown/pink...I went to the Dr. on Tuesday and not only was everything fine, but the baby was growing and starting to move around....

Try to relax...stay off your feet as much as possible, keep yourself hydrated, don't lift anything over 5 lbs...and do NOT google...you'll drive yourself crazy!

Make an appointment as soon as you can with your Dr....or, if you aren't comfortable with your Dr's response / availability, perhaps consider switching...

I am 12 weeks, and have spotted pretty much from the start and everything so far has been fine with my Chat Icon Chat Icon

Bleeding is VERY common, and there are many reasons cysts, implantation, cervix is tender, uti, infactions, uterus stretching, placenta previa, or could be just old blood, etc etc

Try ( i know easier said then done) to stay calm.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: first trimester spotting - btdt?

Wow, what a terrible thing to say.

I don't have personal experience. But my best friend bled her whole first trimester. Now has a healthy 2.5 year old DD. So I wouldn't think just because you have some spotting you are more likely to miscarry.

Brown blood usually means old blood so it could just be your body "cleansing".

I say just lay down, put your feet up, and rest. Stress is never good for you or the baby.

Re: first trimester spotting - btdt?

I had bleeding but at that point the baby was fine and I was told it was very common. The bleeding was unrelated to my loss later on.
