First visit to the gyn TTC! -UPDATE!
okay, tomorrow is my first visit to the gyn. ACTIVELY TTC. I just had major surgery last month and now we're ready.
I want to talk about charting and pre-natals.
What else shoudl I ask her about?
--UPDATE-- So I am feeling a little bummed. . . . like maybe this will be a very very long road.
We talked a lot about my iregular cycles. She said based on my history with irregularity and my ovarian cyst, that she thinks I may only be ovulating from one side, but of course, I would need much more testing, etc. to prove that for sure.
She said that it will be very difficult for me to chart and temp. because it will probably not be accurate. she said she wants to see me in 6 months if I don't get pregnant on my own and then she wants to refer me to someone.
She said I could try temping and all that, and that i could try the OPK's for a month or two and see, but not so sure how accurate they'll be.
I am feeling a little bummed.... Anyone else with LONG cycles that can give me some thoughts?
TIA!

Re: First visit to the gyn TTC!
When I went I just told her that we were TTC
I asked about prenatals and if there are any other supplements that she thinks you should take. They will probably give you FREE SAMPLES
Ask if she feels that there is anything else that you should be doing.
That was about all asked not sure what else.

Re: First visit to the gyn TTC!
I just went a couple of months ago and she didn't tell me to do anything except take prenatals 3 months before.
She also did take a blood sample to test if I am a carrier for Cystic Fibrosis or Rubella.

Re: First visit to the gyn TTC! -UPDATE!
Why wouldn't the temping be accurate for you?
I think that it would let you know which months you DO ovulate by your temperature shifts.
Also, why wouldn't OPKs be accurate?
I think I'm not understanding everything....

The way I understood it is that she thinks I may not be ovulating on my own at all, or possibly only from one ovary.
I am not sure exactly why she thought the temping and all that wouldn't work... perhaps she just more laid back about the whole thing. but i think that she seems to believe that it may be i'm only ovulating for every 2 months or so and that could be difficult to chart and temp. there seems to be no rhyme or reason to my cycles.
i am frustrated because i was put on the pill for years to "regulate" me and all that time it didn't nothing to help me.

Obviously she knows much more than I do, but I would still try OPKs and/or temping. I think the only reason OPKs wouldn't work is if you surge and you don't actually ovulate. But I think that perhaps you might just not get a +OPK the month(s) you don't ovulate. I think temping would work though! I just started this month, so I'm no expert by any means.
Also, about bcp - I was never on it, but I always thought that you don't actually ovulate while you're on it. I thought the regulation was more of bringing on AF at certain times. (Sorry if I'm completely wrong on this).
I think it's good that she will send you to a specialist after a few months though!

i am going to defintiely try charting and OPk's and all that. it definitely can't hurt and it may shed some light on my wack cycles.
When do you start? Right after your period???

Re: First visit to the gyn TTC! -UPDATE!
What you might want to do is request a blood work-up.
A dear friend of mine has always had long cycles. Through temping, she found that she WASN'T ovulating (irregular temps, never had a thermal shift). So she went back to her GYN and requested bloodwork. It was found that she has an underactive thyroid and in fact was NOT ovulating. With mediaction, she should see an improvement.
I don't know why GYNs are so against immediately investigating why some women have very long cycles- many times it's a matter of a simple blood test.

Thanks... but I did that in February. I was feeling crummy and I just switched to a new GP who was very proactive. After hearing all about my struggles with my weight, my irregularity, etc. she did a SLEW of bloodwork. nothing came up and even my gyn. said today (they're in the same office) said that the GP did do just about all the bloodwork that's possible. The onyl thing she noted was that my testosterone was slightly elevated. there doesn't seem to be any thyroid issues and PCOS was ruled out when the GP did the blood work and requested a pelvic sono. I did have a large cyst on an ovary that was removed last month.

Re: First visit to the gyn TTC! -UPDATE!
I would definitely recommend charting- just to get an idea as to what your body is doing.
As for the cyst- I had a large one removed years ago and lost part of an ovary. I still ovulate from both ovaries and have had no problem getting pg.
In the meantime, perhaps try some supplements. I've heard that Vitex is really good at helping to regulate your cycle. Additionally, another good friend who previously dealt with unexplained infertility used accupuncture and swears that is what got her pregnant both times.
Don't be discouraged- be excited at starting this journey

Thank you so much! I lost part of my ovary as well as a result of the cyst removal. I am definitely going to try charting and thanking for the suggested supplements. I am definitely going to try temping, charting and all the rest to get an idea for myself what my body is doing, but i guess i am a little discouraged at all of this! but hopefully everything will be fine!

Re: First visit to the gyn TTC! -UPDATE!
My cycles have always been pretty irregular - ranging from 25 days to around 55 days. I would up getting pregnant the first month I started taking my temperature.
Come to find out when I had my C section, my doctor said I only had one ovary.
Try to take what she says with a grain of salt and have fun practicing!

Do you have an underactive thyroid by chance? I know it's a long shot, but I do know from experience that people who are hypothyroid don't experience the same temperature spikes that other women do.

i had a bunch of bloodwork done and my thyroid was fine. who knows! i could definitely stand to lose some weight so that could be a factor too.

Re: First visit to the gyn TTC! -UPDATE!
There are two things that I can think of that will def help.
Acupuncture and Fertilitea
Since you just had surgery I wouldn't do the tea but the acupuncture will def help you get pg.
If you are interested in getting it done, FM me and I will give you all the info about the Dr. I was using.

Re: First visit to the gyn TTC! -UPDATE!
I had VERY irregular cycles and I didn't always ovulate. When they first discovered this I was being treated by my OB/GYN which was getting me nowhere after months and months and months. We stopped TTC for a while and then when we started again last year I told my GYN that I didn't want to waste anymore time (I was 32) so she referred me to an RE. It was the best care I ever got and I was pregnant in 4 months. I recommend asking for a referral to an RE to treat your irregularity, it will save you a lot of time and frustration. Good luck!
EDIT - In response to the posts on temping and OPK's...........the reason it's a waste and won't really help when you have irregular cycles is because there is such a looooooooong time between periods. For me there was MONTHS between periods and the temping and charting wasn't telling me anything and wouldn't have helped me get pregnant. It kind of got frustrating to bother. That's not to say it is a total waste for everyone but for me it was a complete waste of time.

Re: First visit to the gyn TTC! -UPDATE!
I actually think its good your dr. is being proactive, but if you have irregular cycles, I think you should ask about PCOS. When you get your next period, ask her to do CD3 tests and a sonogram of your ovaries.
ETA: I see she did BW, maybe she tested for that - when you get it back ask if she tested LH and FSH. They should be at about a 1:1 ratio - however, if are about to ovulate, or in the stage before ovulation, the #'s could be off.
For me charting was impossible, I would just have a jagged line that lasted for months. Using CM or OPKs as indicators also doesn't work because I have a high level of LH.
I honestly wouldn't wait the 6 months if you are serious about TTC. If you are ok with just waiting and seeing what happens, then 6 months is fine, otherwise I would go to see an RE now, if your insurance allows it.
I know how devastating hearing you can have trouble conceiving is, but there are many options for you.

Have you had any blood tests done to check your hormone levels? It sounds like you may have PCOS. I would call back and ask her to check you for that...

Re: First visit to the gyn TTC! -UPDATE!
Thanks everyone for your support... i learn so muh from you all!
I have gotten bloodwork done to rule out low thyroid, PCOS and pelvic sonogram. when the doctor was in there for the surgery, he saw nothing "abnormal" besides my cyst, which i knew about and he removed.
For now, i will chart and temp. and see if that helps. if not, i will go back in 6 months to a RE.
