Fish for beginner?

I want to start eating more fish--what are a few good types to try? I had flounder recently and liked it. How about tilapia? Mahi mahi? Swordfish?
I want to expand our horizons slowly! TIA!

Re: Fish for beginner?

A lot of white fish is very similiar.

For DS I started w/ fried scallops - called them fish nuggets. Then we did scampi style (garlic/butter). Moved on to the white fishes (cod/flounder/tilapia) DS doesn't know the difference, all white fish is tilapia to him.

He decided he wanted to try salmon (b/c it was pink). Just poached it in water/soy and an assortment of herb I got from the lazy susan).
There were leftovers so I made salmon burgers: zest and juice of a lemon, grated garlic, basil (other herbs), breadcrumbs, egg and flake the fish. Form into patties and bread lightly with breadcrumbs. Sprinkle old bay on top and panfry.

ETA: I also add capers to some of my white fishes I bake with lemon and butter.

As a pp said, the white fish mostly taste the same. I definitely recommend trying Chilean sea bass. It has a nice, almost sweet, taste. I eat all fish but that's my favorite.

I never liked fish until I tried my friend's salmon and now I eat that. Not too fishy IMO.

I don't like fish really, but I actually love flounder and salmon. I think you should probably try tilapia as well.

Actually, if you go to REYNOLD'S WRAP 's website, you can find lots of easy recipes. They have a section for foil baking - no clean-up!

I would start with flounder, Tilapia, Grouper, Mahi Mahi and Halibut. Even maybe Chilean Seabass.

I find Swordfish to be fishy tasting. Salmon also, but just recently started eating it depending on how it is prepared.

Scallops are sooo yummy!

Re: Fish for beginner?

I agree with the white fish types. Scallops and Shrimp are delicious.

Breading and frying are usually good methods because you can get used to the consistency and the taste with help.

I love all fish but the steaks (sword, salmon) don't taste as good to me as fillets.

Halibut tends to be pretty pricey, but Cod, Tilapia, Flounder, Sole and Snapper are very affordable and versatile.
