But why does it matter, as long as it makes THEM feel better?
I wouldn't begrudge someone their memorial because it makes ME feel sad and creepy.
Everyone handles grief in different ways.
It doesn't matter and i am not begrudging anyone anything...just brought up the topic and how I FELT , how i didn't understand
I wasn't trying to say you personally were begrudging people.
I was using myself as an example. There are lots of things that I find weird about how people handle the death of a loved one, but if it makes them feel better and is not harmful to themselves or anyone else, then I feel they should be able to do it.

Re: Flowers by accidents
When I was in highschool, this is going back to 98 a lot of the kids from my class were dying, I think all together we lost 15 kids from my graduating class within two years. On Rustic road 4 kids I went to school with were killed when they slammed into a tree. 6 years later there is still a memorial on the womans property and she never took it down. A lot of the kids planted stuff (after getting permissio) and I always see her out there tending to it. Me personally I dont know if I could keep it up that long. Maybe a few weeks but 6 years is a long time. I guess you have to be in the situation to really know what you would do.

Re: Flowers by accidents
well my friend from High School was Hit and Killed by a drunk driver. Every year on the anniversary I put flowers at the poll. It makes me feel better. It makes everyone think we still remember that person!
It makes people driving by remember and aware.

Am I the only person that wonders what type of accident occurred when seeing flowers like this?

Re: Flowers by accidents
I dont see it as obsessive. My cousin died in a car accident on the LIE 17 years ago when he was 21. My aunt still put flowers there for about 7-8 years .....I guess it helped her, I dont know...but whatever helps ya know? Grief is different for everyone, It makes me sad to see it, but thats all I feel is sad, not bothered, its not a distraction to know someone died and people in their lives are so upset they need to go to the place they died.
DJ- I always think or wonder what happened.
A kid was killed running across Sunrise Highway next to my house over a year ago and there are still posters and flowers on the corner. I think I remember that poor kid more then, and in my mind remembering those who died, saying a quick pray, it helps me.
Also- I think something like that on the LIE for example, might make someone speeding slow down and think for a sec, at least I would hope it would.....
ETA-my uncle died in April at a tow truck company down the block...I think of going there all the time, I pass it a few times a day and I would feel better If I could get up the strength to go to the place he died..I just cant yet.

Re: Flowers by accidents
I am a person who feels that the soul leaves the body immediately upon death, and if my loved one was killed in an accident, or murdered on the street, I would feel that is where they were last, and their soul is there...and I would put flowers there when I could...
I am so sad to see soooo many more popping up....
IF anyone remembers the Station Night Club Fire a few years ago here in RI, at the place that used to be the night club, its a makeshift cemetary....there is a cross for every person who died that night, and there is flowers, balloons, pictures, etc at each spot...
thats where they perished, lost their lives innocently...thats wher their souls remain..thats why its memorialized...its a coming together of so many different people, who all lost their lives in the same unfortunate way I get an eerie feeling when I drive past it, but I remember those who died that dreaded night...it would not be the same if it was not there to remember the people who spent their last minutes alive there.

Besides the fact you have to be careful because people slow down to look at these memorials on the side of the road and that can cause further accidents!!!!
That's my only problem with the memorials. When the three kid's died on the NS a couple of years ago, there was Horrible traffic for days afterwards, all from rubbernecker's looking at the memorial. Same thing when the Suffolk cop died. Maybe if it was something small it wouldn't be so odd, but those giant memorials are kind of creepy and mostly cause traffic problems.

I certainly DO NOT believe that someone's soul remains where they died...! How horrible of a thought, something i could never EVER bear to think of in that way!

Re: Flowers by accidents
I can understand that this may help a grieving person. To see the spot where their loved ones last were alive. But to think that is a resting place or a place to visit or even a place to continue to memeorialize...imo is something i just do not understand. But then again i don't and never would go to a grave for that kinda thing either.
ETA...And i really do not think anyone really slows down or changes their driving pattern after seeing something like that. It may for that moment but that is it. The next time i pass it, it really doesn't phase me at all.

I agree. I don't think drivers drive with caution when they pass these
