Flying with a 2 year old!
December we'll be flying to Chicago. I'm nervous, what if he cries the whole time? What did you do to keep them happy? How were your kids when you've flown with them at that age? Reassure me with your experience! Or tell the truth if it wasn't so great, want to prepare!

Re: Flying with a 2 year old!
My DD always cries the first 5 minutes of the flight. Not too sure what that is about.
I make sure that I book flights during her nap so I know she'll sleep during part of the flight. I also try to either book jetblue for the TV or bring something for her to watch on portable DVD/IPOD. Other than that---books, crayons & coloring books.
Just try to keep it in perspective when you are on the flight. To much of an extent, you can't control if DC is going to cry on the flight. We'd all like to think we can stop it but sometimes we can't. Remember it's only a few hours and you'll be at your destination.
On one flight, I had someone shoot me a dirty look while DD was doing her 5 minute cry. I just say something to make them feel foolish. Like I'll tell DD, "sorry, people don't understand that you are a baby and will be asleep in 5 minutes". I say it loud enough for others to hear so they realize how ridiculous they are being.

Re: Flying with a 2 year old!
We JUST returned from flying (with a connection) with DS. He is only 15 mos, but wanted to share my input.
At 2, you will need to book a seat for him, so that will help. Bring a portable DVD player, or book an airline that has tvs (Delta, Jet Blue).
As PP said, you're 20,000 feet in the air, try to keep in perspective you can't just walk out of the "room"--and if anyone has a problem with that, too bad on them, they must NOT have kids
On our return home, DS did get a bit fussy and cried on and off for about 15 min, and the man in front of me kept turning around. As much as I wanted to smack him and curse him out, I didn't. I focused that energy on calming DS.
GL!

Re: Flying with a 2 year old!
Definitely bring a DVD player, coloring books, and if your DC is anything like mine... lots of snacks! I bring some healthy snacks, like raisins and pretzels and then some goodies that DS usually doesn't get- cookies or lolipops.

Re: Flying with a 2 year old!
Thank you...the crying and getting the looks is what I was most worried about. I am hoping he'll think it's like a ride in the car and be okay in the carseat b/c he likes riding in the car. Wish me luck! Thanks for the suggestions! A friend is lending us their portable DVD for the trip!

If he's a Noggin lover like most of our kids are.... record episodes of his favorite programs that way he can watch them nonstop!

Re: Flying with a 2 year old!
We flew to Orlando last summer right before she was 2.
We got a seat for her, and brought her carseat. She enjoyed looking out of the window at takeoff, and then we brought the elmer's paints that only work on certain paper, portable dvd player, favorite snacks, a brand new coloring book that we hadn't shown her bforehand....it worked out fine.
On the way home she slept the whole time, totally tired from our trip.
It'll be OK

I know I'm crashing, and don't have any kids so I don't know how much control you can actually have, but I was just on a 5 hour flight back from St. Lucia and a toddler screamed and cried for more than half of the flight. It wasn't even a baby, the kid was yelling and whining and screaming. His parents had headphones on and just ignored it (I was on the other side of the aisle and could see them ignore him). My DH got a terrible headache and it was really really frustrating for everyone else on the plane. If you show you're at least trying people will be less likely to get frustrated

That's terrible! I could definitely understand people being annoyed then. I am a mom and would be annoyed!!

Ya know....I'm going to go with another "you really can't judge the parents" how do you KNOW what was going on?
When we flew back from Florida at the beginning of August, I *thought* I was seeing the same thing with another family, I thought they had a kid screaming and yelling and they weren't doing anything, but in reality, they were and it wasn't my kid, so I can't really judge them.
Furthermore, next time we fly, it COULD be my kid who is upset, so I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt

Re: Flying with a 2 year old!
We have flown with DS to
Jamaica at 13 months Georgia @ 18 months Florida @ 27 months...
Each time I arranged the flights to be around (bed, or nap time) and he did sleep a portion of the flight.
I bought all new things, play-doh, coloring books, water colors, stickers, cars- you name it...
I also brought a DVD player- but never even used it.
There were times he got restless so we'd take a walk, and check out the bathroom or something.
Children cry sometimes- people have to deal. They have just as much a right to fly as anyone else.
It aggravates me when someone snores on the plane, or someone smelly sits next to me- but that dosent mean I think they shouldnt travel.

You just made me laugh about the 'someone smelly' thing. This is true! We'll deal. You just gave me another idea too, I'm going to get some new hot wheels and have him open them here and there on the flight!
