Re: flying with children on southwest
We flew SW in March with our son. He was 6 months at the time. we didnt buy a seat for him and did not bring a carseat(well, we brought it, but checked it with our luggage). We used an umbrella stroller and they gate checked it right before we boarded the plane. We got in teh "A" group and lucked out both times in that we got an entire row to ourselves! If you can get the first row, it has extra legroom!!

I think if you bought them a seat - you might as well bring it on.
If you don't want to - you can check the car seat and the stroller at the gate. So when you get off the plane it is right there for you.
If you didn't buy them a seat then you will have to hold them the entire flight

Re: flying with children on southwest
We just got back from FL yesterday.
We decided to buy DD a seat since she is only 5 months and we didn't want to hold her the entire time. We wheeled her in the car seat and snap and go right up to the gate. Once we were down at the plane we folded up the snap and go and took her in her car seat on the plane.
Parents with children board in between groups A and B.

It's much safer to have them in their carseat in their own seat on the plane. The carseat doesn't count as luggage, and neither does the stroller. Wheel DC in the stroller right up to the plane, and they'll stow it just before you board, and have it waiting for you as soon as you get off the plane, and onto the walkway.
