FMLA Paperwork
I've talked to HR a few times but i'm still sort of unclear.. they told me I could get my doc to fill out FMLA paperwork "later on" but when exactly should I have the OB do this? I will be 30 weeks at my next appointment. TIA!

Re: FMLA Paperwork
if i remember correctly they do it towards the very end and the dr office staff faxed it over. i think i remember picking something up from the office within a week after i delivered. it might be different for each dr office, id check with them at your next appointment, or your HR representative.

Re: FMLA Paperwork
get your doc to fill it out sooner than later... your HR will need it back to file it. you never know whats going to happen - id rather have all of my ducks in a row :)
im 28 weeks & am getting it done on Monday...

Re: FMLA Paperwork
I used to work in HR doing only FMLA (big company with a lot of requests).
From experience I would give the paperwork to your doctor ASAP. I have seen way too many times where a doctor will lose the papers, claim them sent them out and many other excuses.

Re: FMLA Paperwork
I would agree, it can't hurt to have it done.
Some companies have a 30 day policy, where if you know you need a leave, you need to give them 30 days notice.
Doesn't seem to be the case since they are telling you to wait, but no harm in getting it all done and over with.
They will base your FMLA eligibility off of your due date, so it's unlikely anything will change in the next few weeks. That effective date will be changed based on if the baby comes early, etc.
Worst case, you can always provide an update to your company, if for example, your doctor wants you to go on bed rest a week early or something.

Re: FMLA Paperwork
I filled out my portion of the paperwork ahead of time, but the doctor didn't fill out his portion until after the baby was born, since you don't know when your leave will start. i then had to mail it in to my employer and they took care of the rest.

Re: FMLA Paperwork
I would think it depends on when you are taking it. I took maternity leave followed by FMLA, so I filed my paperwork towards the end of my maternity leave and didn't need to have my doctor sign off on anything. I guess if you're using FMLA from the start it would be best to have everything that you can filled out so you can give it to the doc then file ASAP.

Re: FMLA Paperwork
Yeah this is where I'm confused since I don't know the exact date the baby is coming. FMLA does start when I have the baby, except for the first week I get paid sick time, then for the following 5 weeks I get paid 1/2 of disability and 1/2 of whatever vacation I have left until that runs out (then its just 1/2 disability until my 6 weeks of disability is up) followed by the last 6 weeks of FMLA which will be unpaid. So I guess I will ask HR again if I can have the doc send the paperwork in early and just adjust it later when the baby comes...
Thanks for all the input!

i agree. my HR also told me that i have time. not sure what they had meant by that either. by the time DS was born, i had not filled anything out and they gave me such attitude about it and said that i should have filled it out weeks ago.
at the very least, just ask them for the forms. at my job, it also has to be completed a few weeks in advance. the MD is just certifying that you are, in fact, pregnant.

Re: FMLA Paperwork
Get the papers filled out sooner than later. ONCE you give birth you call them and let them know the exact date you gave birth they will adjust the time for you. I had a scheduled c section so I was able to give exact dates for when my leave would "officially" be starting. Make sure you get copies of all your paperwork after your dr fills them out.
