Follicle size and IUI questions

Hi,

Going to be doing my first IUI this week. Took Clomid for the first time this month also. I went for my CD 10 ultrasound on Saturday and the RE said something about a lead follicle 20, a 14, and a 13 and then smaller ones. He said he would check my BW and call back as to when to schedule IUI. When he called he said to come in Monday for Sono/BW again and I should be ready for IUI on Tuesday. Tuesday is my parent teacher conferences....but thats another story. Of course the most stressful day of the month for me would be the day with my luck, uhhh. Is it okay to not be able to take off and relax? Since I have PTC I'm gonna have to head right to work after
:(. He also said they could give me the trigger Monday morning if the IUI is Tuesday. This is good bc mine didn't come pre-mixed and seems like it will be annoying to figure out. Anyways what is a good size follicle for an IUI? Is there always one lead follicle? Please explain follicles to me so I know what my RE is talking about tomorrow when I go in. Also what exactly does the trigger shot do? I usually O on CD 14 based on OPKs and temping so Tuesday would be CD 13 for the IUI, hope thats okay. THANK YOU for your help and for reading all this, still trying to figure all this stuff out.

Follicle size and IUI questions

My RE likes lead follicle 20+ for IUI. The trigger shot ensures ovulation in a ~12-36 hour period. Some people ovulate on their own so it's not an issue and some people need the shot to ovulate at all. I think the shot also helps with final maturation of the follicles.

There is no medical reason to need to rest after IUI. People get pregnant all the time and don't lay down and rest. Those swimmers can swim all directions and don't care if you're laying down or not. If it's the right month... it's gonna happen.

The worst part of the IUI.... it puts you into the 2 week wait to find out if you're pregnant!!! That's where I am and it's driving me nuts!! I have my beta on thurs! Good luck with this cycle!! Hopefully the first cycle will do the trick for you!!

Thanks for all the info. Hoping the other 2 follicles catch up and get to 20 by Tuesday. I already hate the 2 WW and I never did IUI. At this point after a year and a half of being off BC I would be shocked if I got a BFP. I'm already feeling like its not gonna work since the stats aren't high on it working. If it doesn't work I'm sure I will be super disappointed. How far after an IUI do you have a beta? I feel like I would want to wait until my normal AF day bc then I would have to go in on CD3 anyways. Oh and I have to do progesterone 2 times a day....they are in pill form to insert. FUN. Sorry the 2WW is driving you nuts. Hopefully it will be worth it and you will get a BFP!!! Keep me updated! Thanks again

Follicle size and IUI questions

The beta is 2 weeks after you ovulate/IUI so pretty much when your period would come. I am also on progesterone (Crinone brand). You won't get your period on progesterone so they do the beta, and if its negative you stop using it and you'll get your period. Of course, I have no patience, so I will be peeing on a stick every day from tomorrow through my beta on Thurs!

Oh that makes sense that you don't get your period. I usually don't test but since you say AF won't come maybe I will. Although I will probably be too scared to. What CD do you start testing? I know the trigger has to leave your system to get a true BFP. Hoping you get a positive before your beta.

Follicle size and IUI questions

I used a first response test this morning and got a BFN!! If I were pregnant... it should show up by now - 11DPO.

The trigger should be out of your system by 10DPO. By 12 DPO you should definitely be able to get a real answer.

Re: Follicle size and IUI questions

20mm is a great size. Usually they like to wait til dominant follicle is 20mm. I have heard of women getting a bfp from a 15mm follicle too. If you do the Ovidrel or the HCG trigger shot, you will ovulate 36-48 hours from then. The trigger shot just ensures that you ovulate, and since you O 36-48hr they can time everything better. I O on my own usually, but they have me use the trigger for timing purposes. I think its better bc some of those OPKs are tricky and the smiley one never worked for me. If you trigger you on a Monday, you will schedule IUI 36 hrs from then. Example, I triggered last Monday at 11pm, and had IUI Wed at 11am. The shot can stay in your system for 8-12 days. I've gotten a false pos bc of the shot 11dpo. You don't need to take of of work after the IUI. It's personal preference I think. I do, but that's just me. Dr Stelling said you can go play football after and it doesn't matter. A follicle is just the cyst that holds the egg until it matures and you O. You can have one dominant follicle, or many. Once you O, the follicle releases the egg. I have also learned that everyone can have different effects from meds. I did get my period when I was on progesterone.
Best of Luck!!!!

Thank you for all the info. I went in today and I didn't even ask what the follicle sizes were, there was a lot going on. He just said everything looks good and you are ready. He said my lining got thicker. He said based on my BW they would call me in later on today or on Tuesday. My RE gave me the trigger. It wasn't so bad but I'm sore now. They called and said IUI tomorrow. I'm happy to finally be having an IUI but not happy about the low stats with IUI. You would think with all this crazyness we are going through we would have better chances. I usually assume I'm out during the 2ww so this 2ww should be torture. Best of luck to you!

That's great!! Even though the stats aren't that great, a lot of ladies on this board have gotten their BFP from IUI, so there is hope!! 2ww is just plain torture!!!

Thanks, I know I need to be more optimistic....says the pessimist. Yeah I'm not looking forward to the 2WW. At least I have lots going on in the 2ww. Do you take any special precautions during the 2ww?

Got it. I'll probably take it a little easier in the 2ww. Maybe try not to stress at work as much.
