Food Allergies and School Districts

If any of you have children with food allergies, could you please share what if anything your schools are doing to keep your children safe (nut free classrooms, 504 plans, nut-free cafeteria, etc.) and what district you are in? I would also love to hear from parents whose children have no food allergies but who can tell me how if it all the food allergies are addressed in their districts.

TIA

I don't have an allergy child, but in the two districts we have lived in, they have had a nut free classroom if the allergy child is in there. Lunch has always been a separate table for allergy students, and a friend bringing a lunch suitable for the allergy table can sit with them.

Re: Food Allergies and School Districts

Our queens nyc district has

peanut free table in cafeteria

no goodies for parties can be brought in without ingredients labels (ie no homemade)

some nut free clasrooms

no food sharing

if school provides goodies (ex field day they give italian ices) you have to sign permission slip that your child can eat

kids with allergies need a parent to go on all field trips. Some kids with severe allergies have paras or aides assigned to them all the time. The parent has a choice to pay a nurse for the trip

My DS has no allergies.

This year, there are no kids with allergies in his class, so the classroom isn't nut free. I am the class mom and we are allowed (and encouraged) to bring in homemade items for parties.

The cafeteria where the kids eat have "nut free" tables.

We are having a school wide Valentine's Day bake sale this week, and there will be a separate nut free table (and ingredient labels, etc) have to be provided.

I have been surprised about homemade treats being allowed. My sister teaches elementary school in another district and they only allow store bought, labeled items.

There is an allergy table in the cafeteria. My DS is allergic to peanuts. He is not allowed to eat anything that is sent in by someone other than me. So even if someone brings in a nut fee snack for the class, he is not allowed to eat it.
