Stuff like this is posted just to stir the pot. And please, this "statement" has been passed around for YEARS, nothing new.
I have to agree. And if you broke down my salary and compared it to how many clients I serve in a day it would be similar.
I don't bash teachers but I also don't complain about yhe career path I choose. Accept the pros and cons about your career an move on.
That's *exactly* how I feel.
I'll be honest...I see SO MANY POSTS on FB constantly about things like this. About teachers and salaries and underpaid, mistreated etc...I might be naive..but is it REALLY that bad??? I have a few friends that are teachers..some in MD some in NY..their salaries are quite nice (over 100K in some situations but not saying that is always the norm..). Most love their job and say they make good money.
I do know and understand that teachers work hard. That their day doesn't just stop when they leave their classroom. And I appreciate all good teachers, lord knows we need them!!! But I read so much negativity about their job and how underpaid they are, and on and on...I mean, not many jobs out there allow for a summer off, nice holiday time vacations etc...
Am I truly missing something?? I don't mean to upset anyone, I guess I'm just curious. A lot of my teacher friends LOVE what they do and think they have a great deal. And others are miserable. Just so odd to me. all of this.

I don't think it is about being underpaid. I think it is about having to always defend what they make. People are constantly talking about how teachers are overpaid for working part-time.
I am a city teacher and never complain about how much I make. I love my job and am very lucky to be able to do something I love.
Gotcha! However it does seem though that many times the posts I see are about how teachers don't make enough $$.
I guess I get baffled because my SIL makes over 100K teaching, 2 diff friends make in the 90's/100's teaching elementary school (like 2nd grade and 3 grade) etc...they do have their masters and have been at it for 10 years but that is such a wonderful salary in my opinion. I know not everyone makes this...and in Maryland where I currently live its more the norm for an elementary teacher to make high 50's/60's but its still not too shabby.
I LOVE hearing that you love your job..its very refreshing to us parents out there who have kids in classes like yours!! I know it isn't always easy and its not the same job it once was, but we do appreciate you!!

yep.. and im unappreciated and over worked. plus still required to do continuing ed and be licensed and further my designations..
I give a lot of credit to teacher tho. I think honestly its pretty common that MOST parents do.
Honestly never HEARD anyone *I* know say that teachers were over paid or under worked. ever.

FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us
$50 k on Long Island is great? I disagree. And I also do not know any teachers making "much more" than that. I'm so tired of this argument though. I basically ignore the negative comments because yes reaching has gotten that bad. You will never understand it until you are in a classroom so I do t bother trying anymore.

Not to be a pot stirrer or anything, but I teach on Long Island (suffolk county) and I make much more than that, as do all of the friends I have who teach in other districts.
I do agree that teaching has gotten to be a difficult profession. Common Core, APPR and parents who view us as the enemy have changed my opinion of my job, which I loved for many years.

.
Yes most LI schools make over 50k as far as i know. I work in NYC and our salary is much lower compared to LI schools. My brother has been working (in suffolk) less time than me and makes a lot more than i do, he started off makin more than me.

I just don't understand why some teachers are such martyrs. The way they go on and on you would think that they have the hardest most difficult job in the whole entire world.
Guess what - lots of people work hard. Lots of people bring work home. Lots of people are underpaid and undervalued. Lots of people deal with difficult personalities. Suck it up and vent to your friends at happy hour like the rest of us (who are not pregnant!)

Teacher salaries are public info on seethroughny.com. Most public school teachers on LI make much more than $50k a year. Not saying they don't deserve it either.

FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us
As a teacher for 10 years all I want to say is I didn't go into this profession for the money or the summers off I went into it because I had a teacher in 5th grade who was amazing and cared so much for me and my classmates that I wanted to do the same for children one day ... Which I hope I do

I know DH's cousins, several friends, my SIL etc are all under 35 and all make around 100k. I don't know how many credits over their masters they have, but I know the salaries seem to be so high! I'm not saying its not deserved, but I don't know many LI public school teachers making only 50's or 60's..its always much higher from what i've seen

My teacher friends my age (31) give or take a couple years all make between $80k-$100k on LI.

I agree. My first influence was a 3rd grade teacher. My second was one I had in 9th and 11th.
I do love what I do as stressful as it can be. I don't make anything close to $100 K the only part of the salary that bothers me is that others begrudge it. Of course more money would be nice but whatever. I just don't understand how so many teachers are making those salaries.

You teach in NYC, right? What I have found with teacher friends/family... LI usually are paid significantly higher that NYC DOE.

That's *exactly* how I feel. same here. I hate reading these posts. Kudos to teachers bc most are fabulous but you aren't working for 1 dollar an hr. who the he!! Breaks up their salaries like that. I see a bunch of people to as a swer, I don't break up my salary. Teach bc you like what you do, not bc you want 10 dollars per child like a babysitting service.

Re: FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us
I know 6 teachers on LI, they all make between 100-120K a year. My son's teacher told us this year she makes 124K. I get annoyed at both sides of thing. If you choose to be a teacher, stop complaining about it. I feel this way about ANY profession but especially about those who readily go to school and study to become something. I also get annoyed at all the teacher bashing too. I think teachers have a SUPER hard job...but I do believe they are paid well for it.

Re: FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us
Not only are teachers paid high salaries, but they also have the opportunity to make even more money by working in the summers. Lawyers these days start off making 40,000 and can barely get raises. Working for the gov is much more lucrative than private industry.

Re: FOR all the teachers !!!!!!!! and the haters of us
I am a teacher and here are my thoughts:
1. All the examples of who knows who who makes almost 6 figures are irrelevant. If your sample size is small enough you can prove anything. There are teachers at each end of the spectrum. I came from the private sector and made $25k more than I do now as a teacher. Does that mean the private sector is always more lucrative? Of course not.
2. I think teachers do complain about their jobs but if you know what is going on in the field you know it's for good reason. This is why I very rarely complain to non teachers. I just don't expect anyone else to get it. Just like I would never expect to understand the woes of a doctor or engineer.
3. I am at the lower end of the scale since I am a career changer and got in late. I never complained about the pay before (and I am DOE!) but with the recent changes I admit I do wonder if the aggravation is worth it. The risks, stress, and quantity of work that are now present are normally associated with better pay.
4. Regarding the martyr comment: First of all, relax. We are not saying we're better than anyone else or we take on some noble cause. It was an Internet joke that's been going around forever. Even though I personally try not to vent to non teachers, doesn't everyone vent about their job sometimes? Are teachers not allowed? If you don't like posts like the OP, ignore them. Regarding teachers' beefs, I will say this: Many of us are just totally demoralized by some of the things that are going on in the field. Again, you know if you're in it. I am not sure if I can take another X amount of years of hearing that because I physically cannot take 17 year olds reading at a 4th grade reading level and get every one of those children reading at grade level at the end of a twelve week cycle then I am not an effective teacher. That is the threat, at least from my principal, and I don't think objecting to that makes me a martyr. I think it makes me human.
5. Every single day I think about whether I want to try and stick it out or not. Every day. Yes, the pension is wonderful, but I'm not sure if I will want to stay in the profession long enough for that to materialize into something significant anyway.
6. I probably will stay because I love my students, my subject, and the actual act of teaching. When I get more settled, I will try to advocate for some change. And I will reserve my b*tching for fellow teachers.

If you can find a job. My sister has been out of college for 6 years, has her Masters and cannot find a permanent position on LI or in NYC.

One of my good friends is 29 and makes over 80k in a district in Nassau. That may also include pension and other things but that's not too shabby IMO for someone his age.
