I have to agree. And if you broke down my salary and compared it to how many clients I serve in a day it would be similar.
I don't bash teachers but I also don't complain about yhe career path I choose. Accept the pros and cons about your career an move on.

I agree. My first influence was a 3rd grade teacher. My second was one I had in 9th and 11th.
I do love what I do as stressful as it can be. I don't make anything close to $100 K the only part of the salary that bothers me is that others begrudge it. Of course more money would be nice but whatever. I just don't understand how so many teachers are making those salaries.

Yes I do work in NYC ... Some LI teachers do make a lot more money
It goes by taxes though and LI pays higher taxes ... Don't know much about LI but they don't have firefighters like we do and they don't have garbage collection like us so there is more tax money to put towards cops and teachers .. Both make more on LI then in NYC
Highlights of being a city teacher though is more for the kids ... A family member who works in Baldwin cannot take her kids on trips because they have to pay for the bus and the trip brining the cost upwards of 20 dollars a kid ... My kids didn't pay for a single trip this year because I only book free trips and we get free buses ...
I love my school my coworkers and my students and would not leave or change for more $$$ ... But that is just me

I'd like to know how many credits over their Masters degree they have and how many years in the system. I do not know any teachers my age (34) who are even close to 100k and yes I know teachers in prominent. Long Island districts
About 10 years in and 75 credits beyond a B.S. or 45 credits beyond a Master's.
FTR: I don't think I am underpaid. I make nice money. I just don't like having to defend that salary ALL THE TIME. I make it because I took a 60 credit master's degree and many legit credits beyond that. I do tons of continuing ed for my state and national certificate and I love my job. I just don't like that I have to defend my salary constantly. I make what I deserve to make. I worked just as HARD for it as someone in the private sector and I continue to work hard.

Well said. I think especially on LI, because taxes are so high, educators are easy targets. it just becomes tiresome to defend one's salary to people who are not there observing what one does every day. I suppose it is a risk you take when you work in a publicly funded job, but that doesn't make it less frustrating. In my job, I see a lack of respect for education that fuels negativity toward teachers and underperformance among students.

I think some people take "offense" (for lack of a better word) because they hear lots of "complaints" about what is a seemingly cushy gig. I personally know a woman who makes top pay as a teacher, but constantly bitchess about her excellent district/hours, chills out her entire summer, complains about her students, does not do any continuing education beyond her required credits, complains about anything and everything. An outsider would say, "what the heck do you have to complain about?" I also think people can't reconcile teacher salaries when budgets hang in the balance, there are threats to cut programs, and schools may "appear" overstaffed/underutilized.
Every job has perks/pitfalls, but being in a public job I think you need to have a thicker skin and just let it roll off your back because that noise will ALWAYS be there. People could say negative things about what I do, and I could complain as well, but there's always going to be the good with the bad.
I think this topic is just beaten to death at this point.

That's *exactly* how I feel.
I'll be honest...I see SO MANY POSTS on FB constantly about things like this. About teachers and salaries and underpaid, mistreated etc...I might be naive..but is it REALLY that bad??? I have a few friends that are teachers..some in MD some in NY..their salaries are quite nice (over 100K in some situations but not saying that is always the norm..). Most love their job and say they make good money.
I do know and understand that teachers work hard. That their day doesn't just stop when they leave their classroom. And I appreciate all good teachers, lord knows we need them!!! But I read so much negativity about their job and how underpaid they are, and on and on...I mean, not many jobs out there allow for a summer off, nice holiday time vacations etc...
Am I truly missing something?? I don't mean to upset anyone, I guess I'm just curious. A lot of my teacher friends LOVE what they do and think they have a great deal. And others are miserable. Just so odd to me.
im a teacher. i love what i do. and would never complain.
people post things like this because almost every time teaching comes up in converation, someone in the group is bashing them  it's probably one of the only professions where people feel it's ok to tell people they make too much or work too little.
i rarely hear any other profession bashed. except pro ball players.
but there are many people that i speak to who feel the opposite and that is nice to hear

I just looked up my DS's teachers, because my DD's had teacher close to retirement so I thought it wouldn't be a fair comparison.
DS's Kindergarten teacher made 124,000 last year. His 1st grade teacher made 93,000.

That's great for them. The only thing I was trying to point out is that very many of us are no where near that. I am less than half of that salary and I am 7 years in.

I am a teacher and here are my thoughts:
1. All the examples of who knows who who makes almost 6 figures are irrelevant. If your sample size is small enough you can prove anything. There are teachers at each end of the spectrum. I came from the private sector and made $25k more than I do now as a teacher. Does that mean the private sector is always more lucrative? Of course not.
2. I think teachers do complain about their jobs but if you know what is going on in the field you know it's for good reason. This is why I very rarely complain to non teachers. I just don't expect anyone else to get it. Just like I would never expect to understand the woes of a doctor or engineer.
3. I am at the lower end of the scale since I am a career changer and got in late. I never complained about the pay before (and I am DOE!) but with the recent changes I admit I do wonder if the aggravation is worth it. The risks, stress, and quantity of work that are now present are normally associated with better pay.
4. Regarding the martyr comment: First of all, relax. We are not saying we're better than anyone else or we take on some noble cause. It was an Internet joke that's been going around forever. Even though I personally try not to vent to non teachers, doesn't everyone vent about their job sometimes? Are teachers not allowed? If you don't like posts like the OP, ignore them. Regarding teachers' beefs, I will say this: Many of us are just totally demoralized by some of the things that are going on in the field. Again, you know if you're in it. I am not sure if I can take another X amount of years of hearing that because I physically cannot take 17 year olds reading at a 4th grade reading level and get every one of those children reading at grade level at the end of a twelve week cycle then I am not an effective teacher. That is the threat, at least from my principal, and I don't think objecting to that makes me a martyr. I think it makes me human.
5. Every single day I think about whether I want to try and stick it out or not. Every day. Yes, the pension is wonderful, but I'm not sure if I will want to stay in the profession long enough for that to materialize into something significant anyway.
6. I probably will stay because I love my students, my subject, and the actual act of teaching. When I get more settled, I will try to advocate for some change. And I will reserve my b*tching for fellow teachers.
Thank you. Perfectly stated. I can never get this into words because I always get so upset when I feel teachers are being targeted AGAIN. I love what I do and if I could just shut the door to my classroom and close out the world that surround us, I'd love it even more. Time spent in the classroom with my kids is my favorite part.

All the teachers I know make almost double that.
I am the only non teacher of my friends - all of them make significantly more than $50k .........I would never ONCE say they don't earn every single penny of that paycheck -
What DOES however, make me laugh are those same teachers who complain that the superintendent of thier districts makes $300k or $400k .......Um, is it not appropriate for your boss's, boss's, boss to make significantly more than you? The superintendent is responsible for the entire distrcit, every school, every teacher, student, budget etc etc ........I'm not complaining that the CEO makes a hell of a lot more than I do !!
Also, as someone else stated, this is a career CHOICE - I didn't choose teaching b/c I could never ever handle a class full of kids plus their parents - so, I don't have my summers off .........boo hoo for me
My friends (teachers) have their summers off, but make less money than I do yet have to deal w/ a classroom of kids & their parents ......
it's a career trade off - we ALL have it.
