Re: For everyone that works in NYC
Pros - -atmosphere -I love the fast-pace -when I want to meet up with friends after work there's always something to do (great restaurants, happy hours, theater, concerts etc) -higher pay (at least for what I do) -FI works down the block from me so we can commute together (if our schedules permit it)
Cons - -FI works down the block from me (hahaha-kidding!) -cost of LIRR/subway -honestly, I still have a 9/11 fear that I try to supress the best I can, but I work a block away from Ground Zero...

Ditto !
The only thing I don't like about commuting to NYC is the commute....the time it takes, cost and crowds

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
the only down side is the commute.
Otherwise I like working in the city fo the diversity. I think it's much more diverse than LI.
I like working with people from all cultures and different backgrounds.
As far as other pros..everything everyone else said, I agree with.

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
Pros:
Almost all the major companies in every different profession you can imagine. Food Shopping Atmosphere Banks Salary People watching Bars for Happy Hours Im sure you can find a bunch of friends that work in the area to meet up for lunch.
Cons:
Unless you live in Manhattan, the commute sucks big time - Especially now with the pope visiting, all the street closures, delays... UUghh. it can be a nightmare sometimes.
ETA: I miss Manhattan- ESPECIALLY on days like today. I wish I was outside in Bryant Park eating lunch instead of here at my desk.

I'd agree with this as well. For the most part, the commute itself doesn't bother me as I get to read a lot. It's just being a slave to the train schedule that gets to me sometimes.

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
I think it really depends on where you live, and where you'll be working.
For me, the 1 hour 15 commute is a con, and my neighborhood itself is a mix of pros & cons. Not driving is a big pro.
Most peope say higher salary is a pro, but that depends on your industry.
And I don't really work near anyone I know, so I don't meet up for lunch or drinks with anyone.
It should probably be easier to find a job though--there are just more businesses & offices.

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
Pros:
-Higher salary (but that usually compensates for the cost to commute) -Sight-seeing on your lunch break -Tons of options as far as lunch and shopping -Something is always going on -Extra hour of sleep in the morning on the train (depending on how long your commute it)
Cons:
-The commute, but if you can sleep on the train, it's really not that bad, plus I usually get tons of reading done. -If it's raining, everything is delayed, not to mention, if you're walking, you're getting wet -Delays on mass transit... it gets frustrating, but like I always say, it's better than sitting in your car on the SSP.
Good luck!

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
I actually make more money working on Long Island then I did when I worked in the city!
(Not a great deal more but still!)
While the commute can suck, I now drive to work and honestly, I find that an even bigger PITA, especially sitting in traffic on the Sunrise Hwy on my way home from work!

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
for me
pros: easier and cheaper commute- I was driving to CT every day from Queens- $10 in tolls plus gas and now I take the express bus- which stops across from my house
more options for lunch- I love to get salads- and there are so many places in NYC for that
More money and more time off
More oppertunity in my industry
sample sales
meeting friends after work is easier- most of my friends live or work in NYC
I can wear jeans on friday- could never do that before
cons: days that the weather stinks
can't think of any more
but I shoud say-I LOVE NYC- everything about it- DH had to drag me out of there when we got enaged- and I would move back there in 2 seconds

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
I should not answer this cause I see no pro to working in the city. Then again, I never worked on LI but I sure am trying to! I absolutely hate it.
- TOURISTS. If you work in midtown or Soho, you know what I mean. They must be eliminated.
-waaaaay too many people in general
-the dirtiness of the subway/the SMELL
-overpriced lunches (I bring my own)
-walking down the street and being bombared by everyone smoking cigarettes directly outside of their buildings. Too bad I can't even dodge them because there are too many people in the way!!!!
-IMO, you must be on guard and ready at all times to run for your life. I wear sneakers to and from work and carry extra $ just incase.....you never know what might happen.

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
for me: pros: everything is very close can sleep on the commute higher salary variety of jobs can actually drink during HH, public transporation rules! can even have a proper beverage on the train people watching
cons: tourists if you're not used to a fast paced environment, you will get run down by the guy behind - i'm guilty of this myself. but you do learn to become a city walker in time. tourists depending on the area, can be extremely crowded.
as far as the commute, i actually have an easier commute from LI than i did from brooklyn, so the commute really isn't that bad, it just takes some getting used to.
good luck w/ the job search!!!

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
pros - salary - environment, BUT, imo, it also depends on the neighborhood you're in. i used to work in east midtown and did not care for it.
the commute could be a pro or a con. a pro b/c you don't sit it traffic and can sleep or work. a con b/c of the cost, the time and the train runs your life.

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
I loved workng in the city for so many of the reasons previous posters have mentioned. It is a different pace and is so much more diverse. Yes the commute form Ronkonkoma sucked but that is really one of the only cons

Re: For everyone that works in NYC
The only con for me was commuting. The daily commute itself was not that bad, although it did take some getting used to. But when there is a travel issue it can be a nightmare. The Pros are the atmosphere, the shops, the MONEY (yes, I am yelling that b/c it is a huge difference in many fields), the restaurants, and the general lifestyle.
