? for Pregnant Teachers
I posted this on pregnany, but thought I would try this board as well.
I'm fairly new to the boards.
I will be teaching in September and am about 17 weeks. I'm a little nervous since I will be working with Kindergarten. Last time I worked with such a young grade I was sick all the time.
Is anyone else nervous about this?
Is there anything I can do to avoid getting sick? (besides hand washing and Purell?)

Re: ? for Pregnant Teachers
Last year I was in the same boat as you...I started the new year at 19 weeks pregnany. I just was a handwashing natzi with the kids...I always had them washing their hands. I also used Purell all the time, and had them use it too. I had table helpers who wiped down the desks with wipes after snack and at the end of the day. I think handwashing is the most important thing...for yourself and the kids.

Did you get sick at all?
I can handle a cold I just don't want to take lots of meds because then the baby will take them.

I teach a K-2 Class....and yes i did get sick, but just once. Take your vitamins and whatever else you can think of to prevent anything...but if you do get sick there are things that you can take.
I had a pretty wicked sinus infection and I took mucinex...worked wonders

Re: ? for Pregnant Teachers
I called my doctor's office to see what else I can take besides my prenatals.
I plan on washing my hands a lot and trying to get enough rest...hopefully this will do the trick!
I'm pretty nervous about it....

Re: ? for Pregnant Teachers
Drink a lot of water and take vitamin c twice a day. Wash your hands whenever you touch a kid. I have avoided getting sick all season like this! Good luck!

Re: ? for Pregnant Teachers
I was in a K-3 school with my second son and I got the flu at ~34 weeks. But I am special area, so I had a harder time controlling hand washing and saw every student in the school.
I couldn't really take/do anything except tylenol, benedryl and fluids and watched my temp.

Re: ? for Pregnant Teachers
I was pregnant for an entire school year (got pg in Sept) while I taught 1st grade. I never had any problems with getting sick (well, I did have a never-ending cold in my 1st trimester, but I don't think that was necessarily due to the kids!). Just take normal precautions (like washing hands) and I'm sure you'll be fine!

Re: ? for Pregnant Teachers
I was pregnant last school year until March and I got a little cold toward the beginning of the school year and then I got really sick around Christmas. That one came with a cough that lasted until I had the baby. It was awful. Wash hands religiously and get a lot of sleep. Good luck!!!

Re: ? for Pregnant Teachers
I was in your situation last year and I only got sick once.
Try not to touch banisters in the hallway. Wash your hands as much as you can. Try not to touch kids pencils and crayons and toys if you can help it. Really work on having them do the cleanup. Keep purell on your desk and use it after they hand in papers. Try not to touch your face.
Good luck and congrats on the baby!
