For the BF moms who had to stop BFing all the sudden without any transition
I only have like 5 bottles of BM for DS and I have to switch DS to formula immediately.
Should I give him the 5 bottles on the 1st day then formula the rest of the week?
OR
Should I start formula and give him 1 bottle of BM per day?
TIA

I would start formula and bm mixed now and increase the formula amount each bottle.

Re: For the BF moms who had to stop BFing all the sudden without any transition
My DD went cold turkey to formula when she was 3 weeks old. my DH had to run to CVS to pick up some (he got Similac Advance, which is what we had samples of from the hospital). I was unexpectedly hospitalized and could not pump. She did fine.
Since you have a supply, I would gradually mix the BM in with the formula.

Re: For the BF moms who had to stop BFing all the sudden without any transition
i just spoke to my LC about this today. if i can't pump enough BM my DS may need to be supplemented with formula for a day when i am away at a wedding.
she said that most babies make the transition without a problem, but she advised me to mix the formula and BM together to make it more like what he is used to.
so i would mix them together, gradually increasing the amount of formula.

I pretty much went cold turkey at 3 months because I had dried up during a hurricane evacuation and my frozen supply was lost at home in my house without power for 2 weeks anyway. My son switched to Good Start Supreme without any problems.. well the green poop the first few days was creepy but I was warned.
Good luck!

Re: For the BF moms who had to stop BFing all the sudden without any transition
At a little over two weeks I had to stop cold turkkey because i had not started pumping at that point and had no stored bm. He got formula for every feeding for approx. a week. He made the transition fine and transitioned fine back as well. The first few days of formula he didn't poop - but after that he went regularly once a day on the formula. Thought i would share that since it freaked me out at first since i was used to sooo many dirty diapers. The ped said it was fine.
Since then i still give ds a bottle of formula once every other day or so - just to keep him somewhat used to it in case this ever happens again. I am actually in a situation now where i may have to do this in a few weeks so i feel your pain! But, don't worry...DC will be fine...just thinkk of how many smart, healthy, well adjusted babies are completely ff from day 1!

Re: For the BF moms who had to stop BFing all the sudden without any transition
At 5 weeks Alex decided she didn't want to work anymore. So, I continued to pump and started with formula. Each day she got more formula and less BM. After a week I was done pumping and she was happy as a clam.
I know you are devestated about this -- I was too when Alex stopped BFIng. But honestly you have given DS a great start, and you have to take care of yourself. Please, please don't feel guilty about it.
In my family, 4 were formula-fed and 2 were BFed. All 6 of us are healthy - none more so than the others. And many people I speak to have the same experience.
To be honest, after 2 days of being sad I realized how much easier it was to use formula - and Alex finally started to put on a little weight. I was very happy in the end that she decided to stop BFing!
