For those going back to work after giving birth

Are you planning on getting a nanny at home or are you planning on placing your child in a day care?

No nanny. I might be insane, but I only want 1 on 1 time to come from us, not a random person.

I am in the middle of Day Care He!!. My company had in-house daycare, which is why I cam eback to this job. We have just been told that we are losing Daycare in September - right in time for me to need it. I am looking at centers, but I HATE the fact that I will not be in the same building as my child. I am also looking into someone to come to the hosue a few days a week (DH is off Mondays & my mom is off Thursdays, so we only need T,W & F), but this also freaks me out a bit. If we do decide to go with someone in the house I will have my MIL stop by to check up on things & we will Nanny-Cam the house.

OK so I don't know if I answered your question, but I guess my answer is I am not sure, and we are still looking at all options.

Re: For those going back to work after giving birth

My SMIL is watching the baby fo us on days when both DH and I have to work.

Some weeks it will be as little as 2 days a week and about every 4 months it'll be all 5 days, DH is FDNY.

We've talked about DH switching to a schedule where he would work 4pm-12am and then we would only need SMIL from about 3pm until 6:30pm when I got home, but I think for the time being I'd rather have both of us home for family time in the evenings.

My mom will be watching him the two days that I go back to work in the city. The days from home that I work while he's still little hopefully I can handle it but once he gets bigger I'll need more help while I'm home, probably my mom or MIL.

Do any of you have any concerns that the baby might be too little? Might not get enough attention etc etc...Im just starting to think about it and it kind of freaks me out...

Very concerned. That is why I liked having the day care in my building. It was a 2:1 ratio here for infants, and on top of that the company would let us go down for feedings. To me that is what made it OK, and I am a little upset that I no longer have that optionChat Icon

Re: For those going back to work after giving birth

I get 5 months off (whoopie!!!) and we are currently looking into our options.

Part of me wants a nanny, because I have a very flexible job that allows me to work from home sometimes, and it would be great to be able to be there with the nanny watching the baby so I can work and spend time with him.

But part of me wants to make sure he's socialized at an early age, so thinks daycare is a better option.

I'm very confused about it all and the fact that the daycares around here want me to make a decision NOW because of waiting lists doesn't make it easier.

I am concerned about interaction. I want my MIL and friend to take the baby out, enjoy the nice weather,.....interact with other kids...All of the things I would do if I was home with her

Re: For those going back to work after giving birth

right now my mil watches when I work PT (consulting, so not set schedule) - but I think I might go back FT after #2. If I do, I'm more upset with the older child not getting the attention he's used to. But both will be day care - maybe 1-2 days with my MIL if she is willing

Re: For those going back to work after giving birth

I loved Molly at a daycare center. I have never been comfortable with the idea of a nanny. And both my mom and stepmother are executives so they are not home. My MIL (in MA) took care of my niece for many years. I just didn't see her interacting the way the do at daycare. She didn't have young children to play with. They watched WAY too much TV. So my experience has been very positive with daycare.

Of course, I will take the max. allowed which is 12 wks (about half unpaid).

And working at the same time to transition from full time to part time. I am in a middle of a career change to make it happen (well, went to school for 3 years really) and now is the time.

Re: For those going back to work after giving birth

I plan to put her in daycare. I had hoped to stay home or work part time, but, since I'm doing this all by myself now, I *have* to work. I have reservations about the baby being so young, but I hope to find a place close enough to work so that I can pop in on my lunch hour and visit her.

We are going the daycare route after we've exhausted all of our paid leave (minus one week each of vacation so that we have it for the remainder of the year or to roll over).

The baby will be about 12 weeks when we start daycare.

This is EXACTLY the situation we would be in.
