For those house hunting...Are you considering houses with oil heat?
I'd much rather gas, but I am not sure whether to exclude homes with oil heat. I know you can change from oil to gas, but I'd rather be set with whatever from day one.
Any opinions? What's the cost difference between gas and oil?

I hear what you are saying. At this point we have not limited our search based on gas vs oil. Things could certaintly change, but at the moment they have not.

we haven't limited our search in that way yet ... but its pretty high at the top of our "things we'd like" list
i have read on here that it is much less expensive to make the change if the house has gas for cooking, since the line has already been brought to the house.

If you're using natural gas for cooking, that is. We use oil for heat, and gas for water, dryer and cooking. But it's propane, not natural gas.
As for the OP's question - I don't know if I'd eliminate it. Oil is more expensive now, but it's all related and the price of natural gas will catch up soon. I think unless you move to warm climate, you're going to be in trouble when it comes to home heating prices, no matter oil or gas.

We would much rather have gas too, but we are certainly not excluding the ones with oil. We're pretty much giving it all a chance b/c if we really like a house and it has oil, we're willing to make the exception

Re: For those house hunting...Are you considering houses with oil heat?
when we started househunting hubby had 2 requirements - gas heat and a full basement. Unless a house was absolutely outstanding, he would not consider oil heat.
Also something to keep in mind - if you convert from oil to gas, something is going to have to be done with the oil tank which can become very pricey. One of the issues we had in closing was that the sellers had to prove there wasn't a buried oil tank anywhere.

Thanks--it feels like our list of must-haves is getting really long, but we want to stay in this house for a while, so we don't want to compromise, kwim?

don't compromise if you don't have to. I compromised and gave up a dining room, and I'm already having pangs of doubt and we closed less than a week ago ! I'm hoping once we totally move in and get settled it won't be a huge loss.

Re: For those house hunting...Are you considering houses with oil heat?
DH wants a house w/gas heat and has felt this way even before the rising prices of oil.
oil heat is old fashioned. you don't hear of any new home construction outside of this area having oil heat. also, natural gas costs less, burns more efficiently and is cleaner.
and another huge plus - you never have to worry about negotiating contracts every year.
eta: just wanted to add that if we fall in love with a house that has oil heat, we would find out if there are gas lines in the streets.

Re: For those house hunting...Are you considering houses with oil heat?
We preferred gas, but after a year of house hunting I wasn't going to make that our deciding factor.

honestly, we just bought a house with oil heat, and it'll eventually even out, that's how I feel. Gas will eventually be more expensive, oil will level out, etc. It is what it is.

We're in contract on a house with oil heat, but a deciding factor was that there is already a gas line to the house - just needs to be reactivated.

Re: For those house hunting...Are you considering houses with oil heat?
Unfortunately some areas with large properties that haven't had gas lines run don't have that option, most are oil heat. So since are are looking at large lots, we don't plan on it limiting us...although I surely would prefer gas, I don't know it would be doable anyway.
Our current home has gas heat and I know that will be a great selling feature when we go to sell.

Re: For those house hunting...Are you considering houses with oil heat?
we haven't ruled it out.
basically we are looking as a total package....if you have high taxes on a natural gas house vs. lower taxes with oil heat...it kinda all balances out to my mind in terms of money leaving my pocket every month.
we are also looking at alternative heating sources...ie wood or pellet stoves and fireplaces, which would also offset the price of heating the home.
it's all a balancing act.
I'd love to eventually add some kind of solar energy component to my home as well, just to limit my consumption in general.

Re: For those house hunting...Are you considering houses with oil heat?
The areas we are looking in have no gas available, it's not deterring us. Our current house is oil with propane for the stove and hot water.
