For those of us who own older houses..

Like, built before the 1980s (mine is from the 1930s), do you ever get jealous of people who have newer houses? Chat Icon I mean, my house does have that "charm", but there are days when I just want to move into a brand new house in a development.

Nope. My house was built in 1908. I don't like most of the newer houses built now.

Nope.. my house was built in 1934 and I love all of the character that it comes with. True, the bathroom is not totally updated, but I love the charm that it has!

DH and I are not "new house" people!!!

Yes. I love the character and it's so different from everybody else's house but I look at newer houses sometimes that way.

My house is over 30 years old. I would have prefered a house much older than that or a brand new one.

My house is 53 y/o...it's cute...I would have preferred a house from the 30s. I am not a fan of new houses.

I love our 100 year old house. I never get envious of friends with newer homes. It's exactly what we wanted - everything about it is unique - and we hope to stay living there forever.

No, I love old houses! It's very hard to replicate the old charm.

Same here, the house was built in 1959, there is really nothing remarkable about house building in that time period, they were trying to keep up with the post-war boom and putting houses up as fast as possible, I think.

Ours too! Our house doesn't have much character compared to others in the neighborhood, it pretty much looks exactly the same (although a lot of people have put extensions and new dormers up and ours is still an original).

I love my house, don't get me wrong, but, I am jealous of those with new construction because they tend to have a good amount of closets, which I don't. Chat Icon

Our house is from 1962. Shoddy construction, there are nail pops all over the walls. Just generally crappy materials.... We are gutting a lot and redoing it over the last 7 years Chat Icon

My parents house is from the 1920s and is solid as a rock. I actually prefer an older home (pre-40s) to the newer ones.

Sometimes. Our house was built in 1969 and we're the 2nd owners. Really, the 3rd, but the flipper never lived there.

I love our house, but I do enjoy looking at the newer houses and what they have to offer!

Re: For those of us who own older houses..

Our house has a lot of character. It also looks almost brand n ew from all the work we did. But I cant deny, I love newer houses and love great rooms, and kitchen islands etc.

Our house was built in 1954 and it wasn't old enough for me. I wanted something in the early 1900's but DH wouldn't go for it. I have no desire to be in a newly built home.

My house was built in 1920 and I love it. We have the original molding over every doorway and windows which we love.

My house was built in the late 1940s and I wish we had new construction. I just love the idea of having everything be so up-to-date.

I love my 101 year old house. High ceilings, old wooden bannister, original floors, huge fireplace and big rooms. We updated everything, but kept those things. It has such charm.

No. I don't really like all the new houses that are built. Every time I pass a new development with McMansions, all I can think is, don't they make normal houses anymore???!! Our families are getting smaller but our houses are getting bigger. Crazy IMO, but that's life.

Nope! Our house was built in 1970 so it's not really old, but I love it! We looked at a bunch of newer homes (less than 5 years old) and I just didn't care for them. None of them felt "homey" to me and IMO they lacked character. I also didn't like that (at least for the newer homes we looked at) that the developments had hardly any trees and the lots were small.

I love my old house! It was built in the 30's and it's as solild as a rock. The wood floors are gorgeous and we have found so many cool little nooks and crankys that add to the charm.

Re: For those of us who own older houses..

Nope! DH and I bought a pre-war art deco co-op built in 1939. I LOVE the arched doorways, step-down living room and all of the beautiful original molding. I feel that most newer apartments lack character, and I hate McMansions!
