Re: For those of us who own older houses..

I have a 1920s house and I love it! I would never trade it for a newer (post 1940s) house. I love the character and quality of construction of older houses.

Re: For those of us who own older houses..

I have to agree with what most of the posters above said about their houses built in the 50's and 60's. My house was built in the 50's amd I love my house but there are certain quirks that I DONT love....like the fact that if I put anchors in the wall it basically makes a giant hole through the drywall. There really arent those great architectural details that they put in houses built in the 20's-40's. We rented an apt in a house that was built in the 30's and the moldings and old subway tiles in the bathroom really had character.

I would kill for new construction.

We've been doing alot of looking lately and I don't like that when you walk into old houses, the floors don't feel solid. I don't like the smell of old houses (yes, they have a distinct smell to me - regardless of the owners), I don't like the fact that the walls are never quite straight or even. To me, old house = problems. My house was built in the mid 60s.

Our house was built in 1952. I love the charm of an older house! The floors are beautiful, and the house is SOLID. I won't lie...I do like to look at newer homes, but they all seem so sterile to me, and they all look a like esp if you build in a subdivision. I prefer older homes. DH loves very old victorian homes. I'm not in for all of that, but I do appreciate the charm of a much much much older house

k, my home was built in 84 - but that's considered old for my area of fl. i love that it is all brick construction, but i hate the popcorn ceilings - if we stay in florida, our next home will be newer construction - we like the amenities of the newer subdivsions

Re: For those of us who own older houses..

I just mean that the newer houses have a lot of things the older ones don't - for example, now that we are in an older house, this is what I would want if we ever sold and bought a newer house -

garage connected to the house
more than 1 bathroom!
a completely finished basement
decent closet space
new pipes Chat Icon
central air

No. I like newer kitchens because the appliances are so nice, but I don't feel jealous. I love my home.

Re: For those of us who own older houses..

Our home was built in 1931. The things I wish were different was just a newer look..I love the charm of it and how different it is from the other homes. It's one of the oldest in my neighborhood. Most things have been upgraded, like the roof, boiler, kitchen..etc.. but it still a charming older home.

The brick work is really in bad shape, but we plan on doing that soon.
