such as Christmas and Thanksgiving....how do you handle the in-law situation. Do you invite both sides of the family, only your side (or DH"s side)? Just wondering how this is handled...

Re: For Those of You Who are Married and Hosting a Holiday at Your House...

We never had a place big enough to invite both sets at one time.

Our first year together we tried to see both sets in one day but it was too rushed and we did not enjoy the day nearly as much as would have liked. So we decided to split the holidays and alternate it ever year.
Whoever get's the "Actual" day gets the next holiday on the "off day".
Hope that makes sense?

It works out really well, no one is insulted, no one is rushed.

This year we will be our 1st holiday not in NY....wonder who will come to us?!

Re: For Those of You Who are Married and Hosting a Holiday at Your House...

We invite both sides. We see my ILs for everything, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Thanksgiving. I have Christmas Eve because my mom always had it, and she moved to Florida, so she comes up and everyone comes to my house. Thanksgiving, some come for dinner, some come for dessert but my ILs are there for it all...Chat Icon

we invite everyone but most of DH's family is in Florida so its always 95% my family that attends. We host everything because I love it & we have the best layout for big dinners. Thanksgiving we have between 16 & 24 people every year.

I don't, but here's what I would do if we had the room:

Host my parents and sister
His parents and sister with her fiance, his bro with his GF and try and squeeze in both sets of his grandparents. Chat Icon Although I'd love to host his whole, huge family I would probably have a hard time with space...and I'd freak out cooking for everyone! ha ha!

It depends upon the holiday.

DH's sisters have lived OOS for over 20 years now.

My IL's and SIL's have established traditions on it. If Channukah falls closer to Thanksgiving then both SIL's fly in and we do Thanksgiving at MIL's house and Channukah the next day. Last year, this didn't happen. IL's went to my SIL's house in MA for both Thaknsgiving and Christmas (even though they are Jewish) holidays as we live in the same town and see IL's each other almost daily.

Last year we hosted Thanksgiving for my family and we went to my cousin's for Christmas. I won't travel for Christmas for several reasons but will invite all to our house.

only inlaws. My mother has her own tradition with the family...we are starting our own this year. My family can come if they want, but they likely won't. Christmas will be at my house with both families.

Both and then some. Chat Icon (We often have aunts and uncles at holiday dinners.)

And now that my sister is getting married, her FH's family is invited as well.

Out of everybody, our house is just set up better for entertaining and can accomodate quite a few guests.

This is the same for us too. I invite, aunts, uncles, their kids. Our house is large enough and set up great for entertaining where it doesn't seem crowded with all those people.

My inlaws are deceased, so its a no brainer for me!

I never met my MIL, but when my FIL was alive we always included him in my family gatherings.

Last year I had Christmas Eve and we had my parents and my IL's including SIL and DH's cousins.

My borther and SIL went to her family.

Needless to say, it was a packed house!

Re: For Those of You Who are Married and Hosting a Holiday at Your House...

We invite both and all siblings. Our home is not large in size but I would NEVER exclude one side of the family. Having had that happen to my family when I was a child I would never do it to someone else. It is such an awful feeling to know that your grandparents don't want you to attend. It makes you feel like a second class citizen within your own family.
