For those of you who didn't let DC CIO?
How did you get them to sleep through the night? Lance slept through for maybe 3 weeks then all of a sudden he just started getting up again. Now occasionally he sleeps through, but most of the time he wakes up. Some nights he even wakes up 2 & 3 times, but I don't feed him every time. The doctor suggests CIO but I just can't. Anyone been through this or have any suggestions?

I've been through it & failed miserably at CIO. Joseph would throw up in his crib from crying.
If you are going to opt for CIO, do it early on because it gets harder as they get older.
Joseph started sleeping on his own when we moved him out of the crib (or our bed) & into his own bed (at 24 months). Before that we could get him to sleep in his bed if he was completely passed out before we put him down.

OK honestly at that age he might still be hungry. We really never let DD CIO, especially not at that age at all. When she woke up I fed her because it was really just one time a night. She also took a pacifier and was swaddled until 6-7 months so if she lost that we had to replace that but middle of the night wake up we fed her. It stopped on its own and about 6-7 months she slept through the night. IMO I would feed him at least during one of his wakings and soothe him any other times.

Thanx. I feel a little better. That was my original plan but my doctor said I should stop it now because he could still be getting up when he is 5, so I was a little worried. 6/7 months I don't mind. Hopefully he will grow out of it on his own.

That's really crappy of your ped. to say to you. I don't really have any advice on getting him to sleep without CIO, since that's what we did, but I would agree that he may still be hungry at this age. He's still so little. I didn't do CIO really until 8 months when I KNEW she wasn't really hungry. When they're that little, I really think you need to do whatever it is they need to comfort them. That's jmo.

Re: For those of you who didn't let DC CIO?
We tried it wih Matthew and it ddint work. I think CIO works for SOME..NOT ALL babies. Matthew woke up 2 times a night, until I realized that he was in pain from teething. Now he is sleeping till 4:30-5am, and he wants a bottle and I give him one and he goes right back down. Some babies just eat a lot, my PED told me to do it one way, but it didnt work. Plus someone on here lended me a GREAT book. The No-Cry Solution, and I have been trying that and it seems to be working.

Re: For those of you who didn't let DC CIO?
I noticed on another post that you feed Lance oatmeal at 4:30pm, and I just wanted to suggest feeding him solids closer to bedtime. DS didn't sleep welluntil he got cereal at bedtime.

I'll try that tonight. I am also going to try maybe feeding solids 3x a day since DS is so much bigger than the average 4 month old. Thankyou

yes, I forgot to mention. We also give Matthew a a few teaspoons of rice before his last bottle and that helped too. Try that...it may satisfy his tummy

Luca is a big boy too. He gets cereal for breakfast, fruit or veggie for lunch, and cereal for dinner.

Re: For those of you who didn't let DC CIO?
Matty is also 4.5 months old and not sleeping through the night at all. We feed him at 5am but soothe and give him the binky before that. Sometimes 3-4x a night. I don't know what to do anymore. We are going to start the rice cereal in the bottle before bed as well.

Why in the bottle? Why not from a spoon?

I agree with this (minus the pacifier and Michael was swaddled for 4 months). We never used CIO - I still don't if he wakes up and he's over 2. I was never able to handle it.

I don't do CIO either. I figure there is a reason for his waking no matter what it is and he needs me..I am there!

Re: For those of you who didn't let DC CIO?
While I do find cry it out works for us, at 4.5 months I would encourage you to feed the baby one time during the night if he needs it. At that age Molly was still getting up about 3am and I would feed her. She would then sleep until about 7 or so. The times I tried not feeding her, she'd go back to sleep for a little while and would just wake up again.
Another option is to feed the baby a little bit before you go to bed. This also worked for us and helped us transition to no nightime feedings and sleeping 12 hours at night.

Re: For those of you who didn't let DC CIO?
Thus far, I have not been successful with CIO. What I have found, for us, that does work is putting DS to bed a little earlier. The nights he woke in the middle of the night was somehow related to being overtired (no, I don't get it either! ).

Re: For those of you who didn't let DC CIO?
So far we refuse to do CIO, we just can't let her cry and she gets herself so worked up, I have a feeling it wouldn't work anyways.
I would continue to feed DC during the night, I am sure DC wont' be up to eat when they are 5 years old
I read the No Cry Sleep Solution and Secrets of the Baby Whisperer-Both GREAT books!

Re: For those of you who didn't let DC CIO?
You should NEVER put cereal in a bottle without your Ped telling you to. That is really for babies with reflux issues, not healthy babies.
I never did CIO with Molly and don't with Jason either. At 4.5 months old the baby could be going thru a growth spurt and really hungry. The baby could also be teething and waking up from that. "Sleeping thru the night" is considered 5 hours of straight sleep. We all want it to me 8pm-8am, but in reality 5 hours of sleep is a night's sleep for a baby. Is that baby napping very late in the afternoon or for very long periods of time close to bed time?
