FYI - For those who are not aware, one does not wish people a "Happy Yom Kippur" as it is a solemn, reflective and (for some) sorrowful holiday. Simply wish them an "easy fast."
Damn - didn't I learn my lesson the year I came to temple dressed as Yelda, The Yom Kippur clown....

Tell me about it - no one even said anything until I started chomping on the hamantashen I brought with me....
Yelling booo haman as I shook my gragger around....
speaking of hamentashen... does anyone else think it's repulsive to eat his ears in effigy?

this reminds me of the story of a little boy named yankel.
yankel lived in a town called chelm.
he was a simple child and he loved to play the flute.
his father brought him to yom kippur services, but yankel didnt know how to pray.
so he sat there and listened to the rabbi and the cantor. he really wanted to participate, but didnt know how.
he begins to look at his little tin flute and then picks it up and as neilah is about to end he blows into it with all his might and spirit.
all the men around him are very angry and start yelling at little simple yankel.
yankel was so overwhelmed by the emotion that blowing into his flute gave him that he didnt seem to notice.
but the rabbi understood what overcame little yankel and said that when he heard yankel play his flute the meaning of the holy days took him to a higher place and now he truly feels that he is written and sealed into the book of life. the words of the prayers couldnt get him there, it was the meaning of what caused little yankel to play his flue with all his heart that brought him there.

Actually, I DID learn in my hardcore yeshiva days that the triangle represents his hat and his ears as well!!!

historically, the haman taschen comes from ha(the) mun(poppyseed) taschen (pocket)
and the triangular cookie (the poppyseed pocket) has taken on the meaning of being haman's hat
but if you're going to call it haman's ears, it's "oznei haman"

We always break the fast with light fare - bagels, salads and breakfast foods. Anything else would be too heavy on the digestive system.
