? for those of you who've had an ingrown toenail removed.-Updated with another ?
I have an appt to get one removed on Tuesday! I saw a dr last month and he would not remove it until I spoke to my OB to make sure they are ok with it being that I'm pregnant. He did cut it a little to relieve the pain but now it's back and I've put this off way to long. It hurts to waik. OB gave me the ok. My question is, dh might not be able to take me.will I be able to drive myself home? Do they numb just the toe or my whole foot? I really don't want to reschedule as it hurts to even walk right now. TIA!

Re: ? for those of you who've had an ingrown toenail removed.
They do just the sides of the big toe, but basically your whole toe will be numb. It will feel weird, but you can walk/drive without a problem. I also had DH bring me, but then after it was done I realized he really didn't need to.
If it's that bad after it's done, maybe you can call someone else to pick you up or take a taxi and then go pickup your car later in the day.
Good luck.

if it's your left foot, you will be just fine to drive.
if it's your right foot, it will feel weird, but it will still be ok. Like the PP said, get off your feet ASAP because the meds will wear off and it will hurt.
Good luck!

Thanks Ladies! How long is the toe numb for? Does it just hurt for that day, or does it hurt for a few days afterwards? I;m so nervous. I hate needles and don't deal well with pain. I really hope DH is able to come with me

Re: ? for those of you who've had an ingrown toenail removed.
My toes were numb for a few hours. They hurt for a few days, but not constant sharp pain. Maybe a dull pinch every once in a while.
What I remember is being afraid to go out in public, since I was afraid someone would step on my toes. I would only walk with the shopping cart in front of me and wouldn't walk away from it, just in case.
It's annoying and yes it hurts, but it is worth it. Pain upfront for a few days, but then you're good for a couple of years.

Just curious - why you have had it "many times"?..once it is cut out....doesn't it not grow back? I had the surgery many years ago..i had all four removed down to the root (inside and outside of both right and left big toe) now my big toe nail only grows real narrow because of it..there is no way i would go through all that if I had to get it done again and again!
to the OP - I am sure you "could" drive yourself..but does your dr recommend it?
good luck! you will be so glad you did it!

Thanks ladies! I don't really want to go by myself so hopefully DH can get away from work for a little while. But if he can't, I guess I'll have to go by myself. I'm in so much pain there is no way I could put it off anymore! Ugh! I'm such a baby!

I've never had to get it totally redone, but I've had to go back for a 'touchup'. I dont know if a small separate nail is growing back in that spot, or if its just callused skin but it will dig into the side. Just this afternoon I did some mini-surgery on myself to get that thin piece out of there. Once I saw the dr do it without numbing it, I just went for it this time. Hurts, but easier than going to the dr.

Re: ? for those of you who've had an ingrown toenail removed.-Updated with another ?
So i had it done today! IT was not as bad as i thought. But he had to give me like 3 doses of the numbing stuff because i was feeling it. Anyway, i had some overgrowth of the tissue/skin (Ewwwww) and he out something on it to make it shrink. My question is, the tip of my toe was hurting, i guess because that's where the nail was growing. But it's still hurting. Not terribly, but it hurts. Will it go away soon? Is it because the nail was stuck in there and he had to take it out? I want to make sure there is no nail that is still in there and have to go through this again, lol. Thanks ladies!!!!

Remember, the nail itself isn't what was hurting you, its the skin it's been jabbing into. Usually it will take a day or two for the inflammation to go down. They just cut down the sides of the nail so it doesnt hit into the skin again. That's why sometimes the nail will grow sideways a bit and will start jabbing in there, so I'll cut my nail so it doesnt rub anymore. Depending on how long I've let it rub before doing the 'self surgery' it will depend on how long it will hurt. (Usually a few days, but if you couldn't walk and it was really bad then it might take longer.)
