For those who found ticks on their dogs
Did anyones dog get them just from walking on grass?
Are your dogs short hair or long hair?
Do small dogs have a better chance of getting ticks because they're close to the ground?
We are going to shelter island this weekend and I'm worried about my little guy!

Re: For those who found ticks on their dogs
My dog (short hair, 30 lbs) gets them when we visit my parents out on the north fork. She never gets any where i live (western suffolk). I don't know if the size of the dog or length of hair has as much to do with it as the area - i think out east there are a LOT more ticks (deer ticks, anyway - more deer to carry them). I imagine Shelter Island would be full of them. Good luck & have a great trip.

Re: For those who found ticks on their dogs
I honestly would be extremely worried to take my dogs to shelter island. Your dog will easily get ticks there.
General rule of thumb is cut grass that gets ALOT of sunlight should not have ticks. Do not let your dog go into any woods, piles of leaves or debris, moist areas, stay away from where cut grass meets the woods, brush, do not brush up against anything that meets the wooded areas, etc. Some ticks are smaller than a pinhead, a tiny speck of dirt looking thing can be a tick so it is hard.
I live in Western Suffolk and found a tick on my DD from being in our yard (which had alot of debris at the time). Piles of leaves, etc. Since we keep our dogs in cut grass only and keep up with yard maintenance, we have not found any of any of us.
But if I were going to a place like SI, I would be very paranoid and as careful as I could. FYI, if you are using Frontline, it does NOT repel ticks. Just slowly kills them.

Re: For those who found ticks on their dogs
My dog is large and has short hair. Luckily she's white so we can spot the ticks fairly quickly. I'd do a tick check every time you come in. I'm not at all blowing of the concern, because lime disease can be severe, but my dog has had several ticks and while it's scary if you are consistent about checking your dog. You can remove them before they can infect your dog.

This is great advice - thank you!!!
I have to say, having the house for 30 years, we are all super vigilant. We don't go in woody areas - if we hike (sans dog) we are the dorks with the pants tucked into our socks.
The yard is well cut and in the sunlight - that is the only place Cailen plays and knock wood - no ticks yet. I have gotten a few ticks as a teen out there being in the woods though. We stay away from tall grass. We have some woods, but we steer clear now.
I think if I walk Maple on road with me away from the brush, and keep him on the sunny lawn, we should be ok. Thanks!!!!
ETA - my entire family has brought their dogs out there and have been lucky so far. I am very worried because now it is MY dog plus, he is very dark. Finding a tick on him will be impossible!!

Sounds like a very good plan. I think you have the right idea and is the best thing you can do to prevent or limit ticks. Good luck and have fun!!

Re: For those who found ticks on their dogs
Be super careful - He's still a puppy, right? So you can't Frontline him yet. Ticks can jump up to 3 feet and they are more attracted to animals as opposed to humans. They get onto us by brushing up against them - dogs they are attracted to. Also, the tick problem is going to be tenfold what it has been because of the warm winter and there has been a decrease in the population of field mice (related to the lack of acorns) so they are going to be very hungry...
Check around the puppies ears, eyes and belly for ticks and remove them carefully with just a tweezer, making sure you get the head...no vaseline, no matches.

Nope - he's full grown - he's about 16-18 mts old. He just is teeny because he's a min pin. They don't get big. He had his first frontline dose earlier this month.
Yes, the ticks are out of control this year. I gave him a thorough check, and so far, so good. I was a nervous wreck all weekend! He seems to be tick free, but he is black, so I need to check closer.... and there could be a tick not yet engorged with blood. So I will continue to check.
My parents and cousin have been lucky with their dogs not getting ticks. So maybe that will rub off on us!

Re: For those who found ticks on their dogs
We took coco to east hampton. DH took her for a walk on the beach but took her through the grassy part...
She came back with 48 ticks and half were deer ticks. They were every where. In between her paws, In her ears. over her eyes. It tooks hours to remove them.
I ran out to get Adams shampoo. The reviews seemed good. She is now tick free.

OMG. OMG. How did you manage to find them all on her? What size were the smallest ones?

Re: For those who found ticks on their dogs
I have a long haired chihuahua and I found a tick on him last year. He had been in my mom's backyard when he got it. Luckily, I found it before it got under his skin and DH pulled it out with tweezers. We brought him to the vet the next day and he was fine.

I have a pug thank god he is fawn cause I can see them right away! The big ones at least!! The small ticks are the worst every night we check him over with a flashlight!! He has so many on him already its terrible!! My vet also said to put the flea and tick medicine on every 3 weeks not 4 because the season is going to be bad!! We live in Miller Place

Re: For those who found ticks on their dogs
I got the shampoo at Petco. Just in case I had missed any. It is supposed to be really good for fleas too. The reviews seemed good.
They were both the regular ticks and the deer ticks. Thank God she is white because we found them right away. There was only one (the larger tick) that was already sucking her blood. They were in the little crevice of her paw. The deer ticks are like little crabs. They are a brown color not the usual big black ticks.
I didn't have her front lined. But now she is. I wished I would have done it but I just didn't think it was going to be like that!!! Every 8-10 we would put them in a bowl and lit them on fire. So at least 48 ticks are out of east hampton!
