For those who plan to work until the very end, do you plan to work until your due date or when you go into labor?
If your water broke/went into labor at work, would you drive yourself to the hospital?
I was originally going to use a few weeks vacation b4 the baby was due but now I am thinking I'd rather spend the time with the baby after he is born.
If my body allows it, I'd like to work until the very end. Is it naive of me to think I can drive myself to the hospital?

Good question...My job gives you 2 weeks prior to your DD off with Full Salary. So if I go on time or late I wouldnt have a problem then. But if I go before that....I was thinking the same thing What is nice is that if I go late, they dont start my maternity leave until the day the baby is born. So I get paid full salary until I deliver, and then they start counting my maternity leave.

I'd like to work till I can. If my water happens to break at the office there are plenty of co-workers that would drive me to the hospital. Someone in my family can go pick up the car. That's the least of my worries.
I am hoping it would happen overnight or on a weekend. You can't control that.

Re: For those who plan to work until the very end, do you plan to work until your due date or when you go into labor?
I was initially frustrated that I didn't work those last two weeks, however, when I was actually in "labor" it was a very painful experience (at least for me.........I know everyone is different). I am very very glad I was with my family at that time. I wouldn't have wanted to deal with that at work. Plus, something else to remember is that even if your water breaks/you are in labor, your doctor may not want you to go to the hospital right away. Another reason I am now a huge advocate to labor at home. Good luck!!!

I'm planning on working up until my due date which is April 29th. Starting May 1 either way I'll be out of work. I am hoping I won't have to drive myself to the hospital. I'm hoping I will have a few signs that something is happening so that I wouldn't go in that day. I would like to labor at home for as long as possible.

I don't thnk you could possibly know until you were in that position - Some people absolutely could dirve themselves w/o an issue, others couldn't - There are way too many variables involved I think -
If I go into labor @ the office, I'm taking a car service God help the driver

i'll be working until the end.....
my sister did that- and both babys were actually born on sundays...
if its a work day- then dh works 10 minutes away and will hop on the parkway to pick me up, or a coworker could always drive me if it was an extreme emergency...

If all goes well, I plan on working til the end. If my water breaks and I'm home and able, I'll drive myself to the hospital, can't take an ambulance cause they take you to the nearest hospital, and I'm dealing in a different hospital and DH is NYPD in Brownsville so he'll be kinda far away. If I'm at work, I'd have someone hear drive me, but who actually knows what going to happen until it does.

Re: For those who plan to work until the very end, do you plan to work until your due date or when you go into labor?
I have decided I want to work as late as I can...but not sure my body can handle it. I do way too much standing and moving around (music teacher here ). I know I'd have to modify what I normally do. I may just leave a week or two before my due date. But if I'm late I'll be annoyed I used up days from my sick days bank.
But the best part? If my water breaks at work, I'm 5 minutes from the hospital! I'd almost rather be at work so I'm closer!

The hospital is less than 3 miles from my office. I think I would drive myself
I've never been in labor before so I might be crazy

Re: For those who plan to work until the very end, do you plan to work until your due date or when you go into labor?
I would like to edit my response...
If my water just broke and I wasn't in active labor, I might have my DH come get me and go home to labor at home until I was really going. My biggest fear is getting to the hospital and them hooking me up to a bunch of stuff and not being able to move around.

Re: For those who plan to work until the very end, do you plan to work until your due date or when you go into labor?
I plan to labor at home as long as possible. So if I start to go into labor at the office I will take a cab home first. Then I will time my contractions and when they are coming as close as they should to go to the hospital, then I will go. Keep in mind, you can be in "labor" for many hours before they even want to see you at the hospital.
If my water breaks at the office, I'll call my OB and see what she wants me to do. I'll probably still take a cab home first.

This is what I am hoping too. Although I am due in less than 5 weeks and now I think I've already dropped and am getting nervous. Work is only 10 mins from the hospital, but I travel a few days a week - they are still sending me places - to all 5 boroughs.
I am starting to think I should take off two weeks before my due date, although they only give me 6 weeks (unpaid). I wonder if they have to give me longer if say my Dr. says I need it.

Re: For those who plan to work until the very end, do you plan to work until your due date or when you go into labor?
If my water breaks at work, I technically could drive to the hospital as my hospital is about 3 buildings down from my office.
However, I'd be afraid of driving (even that close) if I had a strong contraction while driving myself there.
My last day of work is a week before my due date/induction date, so hopefully that scenerio won't happen!

I plan on staying at work up as long as possible. I work at the hospital that i am going to deliver at and my doctor's office is downstairs from me. So I guess it doesn't really matter if I go into labor at work.

Re: For those who plan to work until the very end, do you plan to work until your due date or when you go into labor?
I was actually just thinking about this. I have 2 weeks left on Sunday and am hoping to work as long as possible. I am only two blocks from the hospital so i think I could drive myself but driving home to labor would be another story. Hopefully it will happen at night or on the weekend or at least I'll have enough symptoms in the beginning that i'll leave early on. My friend labored all day at work without knowing (it was in her back) and drove herself to the doctor after she got out and then home to labor.

I worked until the day I went into the hospital. I had DS 2 weeks late!!!! I worked AT work only until my due date, and then I worked from home for the 2 weeks that I was overdue. I would not recommend working past your due date. At least for me it was torture.

My plan is to work until i go into labor (i work at the hospital i'll be delivering at, so that's a benefit). But, it depends on what kind of shape i'm in those last few weeks. I'm on my feet for over 12 hours, so that might be a bigger factor.
