What I find interesting is that all the top 10 are made here in the US.
"Of the top 10 vehicles traded in since the "cash for clunkers" program went live in late July, six are different model years of the once-ubiquitous Explorer, according to data collected by the Department of Transportation and reported by the Jalopnik automotive blog. Lumped together by nameplate rather than model years, its death-row companions include the big Ford F-150 and Chevrolet C1500 pickups, the Chevrolet Blazer SUV, the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, plus the Dodge Caravan and Ford Windstar minivans."

My friend traded in a Grand Cherokee for a new Grand Cherokee.
Seems the rules should have been tighter for fuel requirements

I agree.
I thought they were required to purchase a fuel efficient car....unless dealerships are ignoring that part of the deal and giving the customer whatever they want.

I though so also- it had to be a certain MPG better
though if the car was old enough- new SUVS aren't as bad- I get over 22 mpg sometimes more

I'm surprised the government didn't make the mim 25 or 28 mpg, something closer to their goal of getting everyone to 40 mpg
The tradded in a '95 for a 09

a 95 for an 09 is a huge difference in MPG - I am sure it meant the requirments and they weren't just trying to make her happy

I get that, just saying the requirements and pretty lame when someone can get another gaz guzzler subsidized by the government.
If the government was serious about improving the milage of cars on the raod they would have some up with requirements that really meant something.
My friend was ready to get a sedan till the dealer said he could give them another JGC

There are definitely SOME MPG requirements because my husband was looking at some BIG pickup truck online that got terrible gas mileage and it said that one wasn't eligible...
My friend got an SUV under this- but it gets like 25 mpg or something...

Just IM her
The Jeep Liberty and Compass didn't qualfy and they were out of Wranglers.
I'm surprised the smaller Libery and Compass units didn't qualify but a big JCG would.
I don't have a clunker to trade in, but these sales are making me itchy to get a new car a year or so ahead of schedule

We were trying to see if we can take advantage of the clunker rebate, but our '99 Honda CR-V doesn't qualify. It was 3 miles over the MPG requirement of 18.

Ford gave my Uncle an additional $3500 off
he basically got the car for half price
you really can't beat that
and 3.99% - I got better on my car- but I didn't want to tell him that
