Forget what "they" recommend... when did you stop swaddling?
????
Everything I am reading is saying 2 months. DS is three months today and he still needs it. He usually busts at least one, maybe both arms out of it.. but, he won't fall asleep without it.
I just battled for over an hours to get my EXHAUSTED baby down for a late nap and finally I swaddled him up and he totally relaxed and feel right to sleep.
My question is this... He has been rolling over front to back since three weeks and he almost is able to roll back to front. He gets about 75% of the way over. This past week, I find him on different sides of the crib that I put him to sleep on, turning himself. That is dangerous while swaddled, right?
So what do I do to get him off the swaddle and still keep him napping?

Re: Forget what "they" recommend... when did you stop swaddling?
4 months, and that's only because he was breaking out of it to put his hands in his mouth.
i say as long as you need to! if he is getting plenty of stimulation and physical activity when awake - tummy time, etc. - then IMO there is nothing wrong with swaddling for a while longer. i just would not do it if he starts rolling while swaddled. that would make me nervous.
ETA: there is a difference between moving around the crib and rolling onto his belly. which is he doing?

We stopped swaddling around 5 months. When she was trying to break out we switched her to a sleep sack cold turkey. Never had a problem. Swaddle the baby until he lets you know that he's done.

He is moving around the crib and rolling up onto his side.. almost onto his belly.
He breaks out of it at night. One or both arms. It's really just falling asleep that he needs it for.

We stopped DS cold turkey at 6 months because he was rolling onto his belly. DD we did one arm out starting at 6.5 months and then one day I tried both arms out at 7 months and she was fine.

At 3 months because she kept rolling on to her belly...and with her arms swaddled I was scared she wouldn't be able to lift her head up.

Re: Forget what "they" recommend... when did you stop swaddling?
Around 3 months when DS started rolling over in his sleep. I didn't like the idea of him rolling over and not having his arms free.
But, I would have continued to swaddle him until college if he didn't roll over! I was a HUGE fan of the swaddle!

I stopped swaddling DD when she A) got too big for the blanket and B) the weather was so warm she would wake up in a ball of sweat! Together those things translated into @ 5 months of age.

We stopped at 4 months, and were free of it by 4.5months after 2 weeks of weaning from it.

Re: Forget what "they" recommend... when did you stop swaddling?
at this point tricia i would try swaddling him with one arm out and see how he does. you can always move to two arms out and then get rid of the swaddle altogether. the rolling would worry me, not having his arms free to push himself up or something away from his face.

With both DS & DD when we got home from the hospital is when we stopped. Either of my children liked in the hospital to begin with.

Re: Forget what "they" recommend... when did you stop swaddling?
DS is 7 weeks and I did not really notice exactly when the last time he was swaddled, at least a few weeks ago when the receiving blankets got kind of small to get a good swaddle. I did switch from the flannel receiving blankets to these gauzy summer blankets that he and I really like. They are much bigger. I put him in the sleep sack sometimes with a long sleeve tee with fold over hand mitts or I would do a snug as a bug in a rug tuck, kind of like an open back swaddle. Now he's in footsie one piece with a blanket just laid over him and he's fine with that. He's been sleeping 8 hours for the past three nights.
Try doing a good tuck from just the top and flip it under his feet too.

Just stopped using the Swaddle Me last week. DD is 3 months old. She liked the swaddle, but, likes being "free" even more.

Re: Forget what "they" recommend... when did you stop swaddling?
i think we had the record.. we swaddled DD til **GASP*** almost 8 months... and we would have done it longer if she did not outgrow it.. she never rolled over, loved it and slept 12 hours from 6 weeks on...
i admit it was hard to break the cycle, we had to do one arm out, then both, then a sleep sack and finally nothing.. took about 2 weeks and she doesnt sleep like a rock like she used to lol..
im a big believer if it is not broken, dont fix it!

1 week. DD HATED to be swaddled. Would always break out of it. She liked her arms up by her head when she slept.

Re: Forget what "they" recommend... when did you stop swaddling?
We stopped swaddling around the 4 month mark. Since I had just gone back to work teaching, I waited until the December break from school so Id have been able to catch up on sleep if it didn't work out. I was fortunate that cold turkey worked.

1 week before she was 6 months old.. My ped said it was fine, she'd tell us when she didn't want it anymore and she did by breaking it out of it everyday and not waking up
