Formula at night?
When we left the hospital a week ago, we were giving DS 1 formula supplement at night because he had lost 10% of his body weight. I only did it the first night we were home and then he seemed satisfied with my milk only. We saw the pedi the next day and he had already gained 3oz back so we stopped.
Last night, he was so unsatisfied. He screamed and screamed and rooted around constantly for a feed. I just kept switching back and forth one breast to the other until finally my DH said to give him a supplement.
Well, the poor kid slept from 1:30 until almost 5. I felt SOO guilty like I had just given it to him to keep him quiet He woke up and happily took the breast but still.. Did I do the right thing?? Does anyone else give formula at night?

I think you absolutely did the right thing. He probably felt so much better after having a full belly. I know I do.

Re: Formula at night?
We always did a bottle of formula at night. We started the same way you did, because my DS had lost too much weight and was still below his birthweight at 2 weeks. Then it just made life so much easier we stuck with it. I would BF all day and then DH gave one bottle at night so I got a longer stretch of sleep. I had tried to pump a bottle but just couldn't figure out when and how much. Honestly that formula bottle was the only thing that kept me sane the last few months.
Now at 12 weeks he occasionally sleeps through a night feeding so sometimes he gets one and sometimes he doesn't. Don't beat yourself up. They way I look at it is my DS got 90% breastmilk and one formula bottle each day. DH got to help out by feeding him and it was good for him to get used to formula because when I go back to work hopefully he'll have formula at daycare and BM at home.
You have to do what works for you!
Good luck!

Don't beat yourself up! You did the right thing. I wasn't able to BF for long so I know how if feels to supplement.
If you baby is happily accepting a bottle at night and your breast all day it sounds like a great system. Dh could even help you in the middle of the night that way

You gave into him because you wanted your son to be happy and content, not because you just wanted him quiet. There are plenty of woman who do supplement at night! Don't be upset. However if I were you and really dedicated to EBF, I would continue to try to just offer up BM. Last night may have just been a 1 time thing, or not. Also call a LC if you want more advice / help!
Good Luck!

Re: Formula at night?
If you decided to supplement at night for awhile- be sure to pump to replace that feeding. There is NOTHING wrong with supplementing if you feel he needs it. BUT- if you truly want to EBF- try to keep your supply up (NO missed feedings, whether by baby or by pump).
