Formula Feeding and Plane Travel?

Any tips? DD and I are going to be taking our first plane trip together....we have two very short flights with a 1 hour connection..curious as to how other people handled formula feeding with all the airport security.

Did you make up formula at home or pack RTF and keep it cold?
Buy bottled water inside security and mix up powdered?

DD does not do well with room temp or cold bottles unless she is REALLY hungry....any advice?

I would bring an unopened can of formula and buy bottled water. I suggest you start getting DC used to colder bottles. You can't always be near a bottle warmer or microwave.

An unopened can of powder? Couldn't I just use one of those dispensers? Or did you mean RTF?

Believe it or not, when she was younger she took room temp no problem, but once she started teething, the only way we could get her to eat at all was to warm the bottles up...she's almost 9 months and I'm trying to give her cooler and cooler bottles but she's on to me....once the bottle cools down to room temp, she stops eating...but she will eat her solids mixed with room temp formula no problem. I have resigned myself to the fact that she's getting a room temp bottle while we're traveling.

I am flying on July 30th. We have a direct flight from NY to Florida. I am bringing 3 Avent bottles with pre-scooped formula in them and then buying bottled water when we get through security. That is 9 hours worth of bottles, so I am Chat Icon that will be enough for what should be 3 hours on the plane.

I am also packing in my checked luggage a sample can of formula, so I can use that once I get my luggage and then I am buying a big can once we get there.

If you could use RTF, I would. But my DS' formula is only powdered.

ETA: I would try to get your DD used to room temp or cold bottles BEFORE you leave on your trip. You don't want her refusing a bottle on the plane for that reason, KWIM?

Re: Formula Feeding and Plane Travel?

I flew a few weeks ago. I brought 2 8 oz RTF bottles and an unopened can of RTF (8oz) in my diaper bag. When I got to security...I took them out and put them on the belt separately from the rest of my stuff. Nobody said a word. I flew from Newark to Ohio. It was a good thing I brought extra, because my flight was delayed 3 hours Chat Icon

Sure you could, I just don't have one of those. And I did mean powdered formula.

Thanks for the help....I think we might just put powder in empty bottles and buy bottled water. Hopefully there won't be any delays and I'll only have to feed her once.

The only problem with having the formula already in the bottle THEN adding the water, is that it's not really accurate measuring ounces wise since the powder adds more volume to the bottle (does that make sense?) Unless you use a measuring cup to add the water. I just bring the formula dispenser and pour the water in the bottle then add the formula.

Yeah, I was just thinking of that when I was giving DD a bottle a few minutes ago.....seriously I don't know what I'll do when we don't have our feeding/cuddle times anymore....this is when I have all my brainstorms and coherent thoughts....somehow this clears my mind.

Re: Formula Feeding and Plane Travel?

I flew 6 times ni June and July. I packed water in the baby bottle and the powder formula in another container in my diaper bag that I carried on. Each flight I had 2 or 3 bottles. I did not get stopped once. One of the flights my DH had stuck an actual bottle of water in my bag, and that was taken, but not once did they even question the baby bottles. I figured worse came to worse, I would pour the water out and buy water at in the terminal.

I think I read that a couple of people had to dump their bottles. The problem with it is you actually have to leave the line to dump the water out unless you want to just throw the bottle out all together, then you can do that at the checkpoint. At least that is my understanding of how it works.

I had issues at JFK with RTF formula. Although i should have been given no issues, they almost didn't let us pass with the formula and thus we almost had to cancel our flight. I was pisssssed and have complained to the TSA.

Go with the powder, but wait to put it in the bottles. Just bring a big can....that is the advice they gave me when I was going home. If it's just powder in a bottle you never know what they will say.

Good luck!

Re: Formula Feeding and Plane Travel?

thanks for help ladies.....I have to add that I am always amazed that the TSA employees at the airport are not fully aware of what's allowed and what's not and that it varies from airport to airport.....

I think its a good move to carry the printout from their website with you to show them that yes, baby formula is allowed through security. You never know!
