Re: Freaking out at meetings
actually- that is one thing I can do pretty well. I get nervous- but just remember, you are just talking to people- people like your friends or people you work with.
I am a trial attorney and when I went to pick my first jury I was a wreck. When I picked my second- i realized I was just going to have a conversation wtih them, like the millions of conversations I have with people a week. It made me feel a lot better and took teh pressure off.

Re: Freaking out at meetings
It will subside!
I have meetings often at work where I have to contribute- you will get used to it.
I am so afraid of public speaking!

Re: Freaking out at meetings
I hate public speaking. When I had to teach computers - I did it from the back of the room when I taught.
I don't mind talking in front of co-workers but the large events still make me nervous.

Re: Freaking out at meetings
I just had to make a presentation to all the senior management at my job yesterday. My supervisor, and head of my dept (who is part of the upper management team) had me practice doing it with them first.
Believe it or not, I am more nervous doing it in front of one or two people, than I am to do it in front a big room.

Re: Freaking out at meetings
Thanks everyone for letting me know that I am not alone. I actually had to do a meeting this past thursday. At first I wasnt going to do it bc I was real nervous, then I thought If i dont do it I will have a miserable weekend wondering about this weeks meetings. I did it. A little stressed the nite before but I guess with time it will subside as some of u had said. I am thinking of the gum or sucking candy routine to keep my mind flowing during these meetings.

I would avoid the chewing gum and sucking candy. If I were your audience, that would drive me nuts!
AT my previous job, I had to do a lot of public presentations in different communities and my previous job before that I had to go on the record in front of Federal Judges as a witness and/or to give them my recommendations. And every single time, I was always nervous! Never liked public speaking! I took a class in public speaking in College. It helped but I still get very nervous til this day. What helps me is that if it is a large room, I look at the wall in the back. Of course, Not looking directly straight but in the area. I also psych myself by saying....."It is only a few minutes....you can do it!"
ETA: Good to know you got it out of the Way! I like your thinking! I am exactly the same way!

Re: Freaking out at meetings
I know what you mean when its my turn to speak out in a meeting I get very hot I feel like my face and ears turn bright red (wether they do or not I don't know) and I stutter at times while I am speaking and can't seem to get things out I feel like it takes me an hour to say something that takes 5 minutes

I have actually done more than a few the last few weeks and it has gotten alot better. I guess practice makes perfect BUT today I walked in and usually the meeting have like 10 people...today there were like 25. I nearly died but it was so last minute that I didnt have a chance to back down. OMG...I thought I was gonna die when I walked in BUT I got through it! And yes Like u I would die laughing if i thought people were nude. Could u imagine! haha

Re: Freaking out at meetings
I hate it!!! I turn bright red, I mean really red. That has become more of an anxiety for me than anything else. I don't want to turn red! It's so stupid. And then I hate when people have to tell how red I am! That makes me more red! I know how f**king red I am! You don't have to tell me! But now I'm really just trying to look at it as one of my quirks, and everybody has quirks.
