Free Advice from the Holistic Chiropractor...
I posted last week that I was seeing a holistic chiropractor who has worked wonders on my back. We got to talking about my son and his chronic ear infections and all. She was telling me that she could definately help his ear infections. I was intrigued so I went today for my adjustment and asked her about it. She said she'd give me some free advice just to try and if I wanted to I could bring him in for a consult.
First, she said to make sure that DS is on a probiotic while he is on the antibiotic which we're already doing. DS's ped. prescribed florastor. So we're good on that front.
Second, she said to take him off milk-based formula. She thinks it would take a week or two for me to see a difference. Given the he has mild excema and a genetic disposition towards asthma (from dh) she believes that the dairy is agitating his immune system. She told me to consider putting him on rice milk. Or some other non-dairy formula. What do you think? I'm nervous to do anything without DS's ped. on board but at the same token I also feel like they are very lax about the allergy thing because "it's too early to tell". Not that I don't beleve them, but if there is something I can be doing now to help him maybe I should do it. Anyone have any experience with rice milk or any other types of non-dairy formula?
BTW, DS is 9 months.

Re: Free Advice from the Holistic Chiropractor...
I am all for alternative forms of medicine. I used a lot of Chinese medicine in conjunction with my IF treatments and really do think it helped conceive HOWEVER...
a holisitic chiropractor is NOT a pediatrician.
What is this person's MEDICAL training?
Did they have additional education and experience treating children?
I just know that one of the many reasons why I picked my ped is because he completely his residency at a leading children's hospital in the US. He education and experience is in treating children so I feel confident with his advice over other medical personnel.
I, personally, wouldn't be so quick to change formulas.
ETA: I'd run everything they told you past your ped.

I would do some research on my own and then discuss it with my ped. I would not switch to rice milk, as it does not have all the vitamins & nutrients in it that formula has.
If you really want to switch off milk based formula, I'd think about soy based formula first.
And because you have him on medication right now I wouldn't make any changes to his diet until that was finished. What if it masks an allergic reaction to the new food?

and that's exactly where my fear comes in. The thing is, if you read about holistic medicine in seems as if in most parts of the world people turn to holistic medicine first before conventional medicine. But in the US doctors tend to try and medicate first. With infants it is a slippery slope because if you medicate too quickly you're not helping your childs ability to build their immune system. I'm not saying i'm a believer one way or another but that's sort of the gist.
In terms of medical training, she is a doctor so I don't doubt her credentials insofar as to say she has no medical training. By no means does she replace my pediatrician or have anywhere near the expertise in pediatrics. I wasn't planning on having her medicate him or anything. What I'm looking for is some insight on people who have switched from dairy to non-dairy or even soy and what changes they've seen in their DC. That is actually no that uncommon, of course it is usually done under the guidance of a pediatrician.
But you're right, if I go this route I should speak to his ped first. Just to give a history, he's been battling an ear infection for almost 2 months now and is being pumped with strong anti-biotics at this point. I'm a frustrated mother who feels sorry for her little guy who's belly has been ripped to shreds because of this. If there is something as simple as switching formula I might consider it.

she did say that there was a product out on the market that was non-dairy and non-soy that had the same vitamins and nutrients as formula but she couldn't recall the name. But that's a great point. I wouldn't want to deprive him of what he needs.
Also, none of these changes will be made, if they are, until I have a follow-up with the ped on this last course of antibiotics which is on 4/21. If at that point it has cleared I'll probably not want to do anything and just wait and see. If it hasn't then I would be inclined to want to take some action. They don't want to do tubes until the summer so the thought of having him on antibiotic for another few months just kills me.

My son was on Neocate, which is an amino acid based formula, so babies who are milk and/or soy allergic can digest it.
I know how frustrating it is to know something is not right with your kid and feel like you aren't getting anywhere in fixing it.
ETA: When his milk protein allergy was first diagnosed we switched to Allimentum (the proteins are predigested so it's easier on the tummy) and he stopped projectile vomiting, but he still had bloody stools. Then we moved to Neocate and that cleared up too.
His eczema never really cleared up until we saw a dermatologist.

some people are believers in chiropractors and some aren't. I actually didn't specifically go to her because she was holistic. I didn't know that until I got there. I picked her out of my insurance book for myself. But I have to tell you, I bet she could help. Between carrying him around, constantly on the floor playing, hanging over the bathtub giving him a bath I was a mess. she helped with the immediate problems and has somehow solved other "aches" that I never knew would ever go away. Mostly joint pain.

Re: Free Advice from the Holistic Chiropractor...
Well, first of all, I think there's some validity in the correlation between dairy and sickness. Dairy, in general, is not great for humans to ingest. However, a developing baby really needs it to grow. It's not just the vitamins and nutrients in there that are important, but lactose is an important type of sugar in milk-based formulas that help your baby's brain develop. Soy formulas or amino acid based formulas (like Neocate, which my daughter was on), have artificial sugars in them that are close enough to mimicking the function of lactose. Rice milk and soy milk do not have these. First of all, there are many health concerns about soy milk. My daughter is on soy milk now, and we are pretty much taking her off of it and putting her only water and a healthy-fat rich diet because the effects of the phytoestrogens are really unknown and have been linked to some really questionable health concerns. As for rice milk, it has basically no nutritional value, ontop of being extremely constipating. My point is, there's drawbacks to everything. Personally, I would never take a chiropractor's advice on what to feed my developing child. I would consult a pediatric nutritionist before even asking my pediatrician. Someone who specializes in diet can be of more help to you. If nothing else, this chiropractor got your wheels turning and now you're ready to do some more research.

exactly!!! That's where I'm at right now.
I turn to you ladies before I even do any research because I know that I have the best sources right at my fingertips. Before today I never even knew rice milk existed or heard the word phytoestrogens. Nor did I know the benefits of lactose. I take these things for granted since up until now I never thought about other options or knew I had them. Thank you for the info!

I think it's a wonderful thing to question all of this and want to know more. It's something I think about all the time, and I'm glad that you had an experience that opened you up to looking into other possibilities for your son
