Freezing Breastmilk?

How many ounces should I freeze in each bag? DD is almost 5 weeks old. Thank you!

Also, anyone use the Lanoish bags instead of Medela? The Lanoish ones are supposedly cheaper at Target than the Medela, and I wanted to know how you liked them.

Thanks Chat Icon

I froze 3 oz. He is 5.5 weeks. I did not try other bags but Medela. I do have them though.

I use the Medela bottles. I'm not a big fan of the bag since I had one break Chat Icon although it's great to be able to throw them out afterwards rather than clean.

I freeze 2oz per small bottle and 5oz with the bigger storage bottles

I usually put 4-5 oz in each bag. I have only used the Lansinoh bags and I am very happy with them.

I just started freezing. I have the Gerber Seal'N Go bags. I freeze 6 oz at a time. I freeze my first morning's milk b/c that is when I get the most....I'm hoping to store up a big supply so I can stop pumping sooner! Chat Icon

Re: Freezing Breastmilk?

Thanks for the replies!

There's such a range in the # of oz. you all freeze, so I don't know how much to do...DD is almost 5 weeks, if that matters. If I freeze a small amount in each bag, I'd need to use multiple bags at each feeding then, no? And if I do like 6 oz., what would I do, put it in 2 bottles? I'm so confused and worried I will end up wasting milk! Chat Icon

Re: Freezing Breastmilk?

I don't freeze big amounts because I don't want to waste it. DS drinks 3 to 3.5 oz per bottle. In a BF class I took they told us to freeze the size of a serving bottle.

Re: Freezing Breastmilk?

IMO, i wouldnt freeze more than 3 oz, just because anything u dont use u have to throw out, as frozen milk u obviously can only thaw and use once....i wouldnt freeze 5 or 6 oz, unless, of course, you know that exactly how much DC drinks.... Chat Icon

Re: Freezing Breastmilk?

My son is 5 weeks and drinks 3 ounces right now. If i know i am going to NY i will freeze my milk. I was told only to freeze 3 ounces at a time. I use the Avent freezer storage bottles. I havent tried using the bags yet. Although I do have some that came free with my Lasinoh breast pads.

Re: Freezing Breastmilk?

I used the Gerber bags and had no problem with them. I would fill a couple and then put them in a regular freezer bag so they had an extra layer of protection. As far as how much, if you're freezing for the future, I would do it in 6oz increments. I started with doing 3oz bags and then I wold have to defrost two at a time to make one bottle! Chat Icon

Re: Freezing Breastmilk?

I read about using ice cube trays to make 'breastmilk ice cubes' then store the cubes in freezer bags. I do this. Each cube is about 1/2 oz, maybe a little more. I mark the bags by week. They are easy to pop into bottles as ice cubes and you don't need special bags or freezer bins.

Re: Freezing Breastmilk?

I loved the Lansinoh bags.

I increased the amount in each bag as DD was eating more. I figured that as I was rotating the stock, I would need more in each bag as she was getting older. Then I thought I was wasting bags, so I starting putting 8oz in each bag and then when I needed it, I defrosted a day's supply at a time. If your DC is taking 30oz a day (6oz x 5 feedings), you can just defrost 4 bags for the day and be just about done and if you need more, you can just defrost one more bag when you need it. The milk is good for 24 hours once defrosted, so I don't see how it can go to waste -- it's not like it is only good for 6 hours or so.
