Fridays LIRR Experience
As you all know, I live in Bklyn but I needed to go to LI for a wake. Since DH, DS & I were all going to the wake, DH decided that he was going to meet me at the Valley Stream station. DH is from LI so he knows LI. I boarded the 5:23 pm Far Rockaway train out of Penn Station and should have arrived at Valley Stream at 6:02 pm. While on the train it was brought to our attention that someone had been hit by the train in front of us (you all know that story) and we would be stuck there for awhile. Three hours later, we finally got power back and we were able to move but then we were told that we were having brake problems so we were stuck there for another hour. After an hour, we were finally able to move to the Jamaica station. When we arrived at the Jamaica Station, they put our train out of service. We then all boarded another train. When I finally got to the Valley Stream station, it was after 10:00 pm. So I was on the train for 4 ½ hours. I have taken the LIRR before but have not taken it in 2 1/2 years and the one time I had to take it there were problems.
Was anyone on that train with me?

I know. The worse part was that the power went out so there was no a/c and only emergency lights.

I would have been stuck as well, but for some reason I decieded to jet out early on Friday. I left a few minutes before 5, so i got a train prior to the accident.

I was going to take the 5:23 instead of 5:32 so I would not have been stuck either but I decided the take the next train since the 5:23 was so jammed packed.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience
that sucks-
years ago when there was another fatality on the tracks- they kicked us all off in woodside and didn't even offer another trian or option
I think getting kicked off the train is better- even if you have no idea where you are- I grabed a cab and went to a friends house and got picked up

I was hoping for that so that DH could of come and gotten me but we were stuck between Woodside and Forest Hills stations.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience
I lucked out because since I got out of work late I rushed and took the subway to Flatbush to make the 6:18 which hooks up with the 6:13 out of Penn @ Jamaica. Well the 6:18 was late getting into Flatbush. I should have known then. When we got to Jamaica - it was a NIGHTMARE. Anyway - I only had to wait an hour for a train - which I don't think was bad considering what a lot of other people went through
On the bright side - at least DS wasn't with you. I'm sure it would have been a lot tougher!!!

I was on the 5:22 to Ronkokoma...I too live in BK, but I was meeting up with some special ladies
thankfully, we were only delayed about 30 mins.
I don't know what happened to the person that got hit, but

That is true. I felt bad for a few mothers on the train with their toddlers.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience
My FIL was on the train that hit the child. He was on a 5:17 to Westbury and got home at 10pm. His train was put out of service as well and they had to go back and get on another train. The new train they boarded also got delayed because someone needed medical attention. That is when he finally lost his patience.
My DH was on the 5:35 and they were stopped in the tunnel. Finally they reversed them back to Penn. He got off and took the subway to Main Street - I picked him up there at 7pm.
The whole thing was a MESS!!!

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience
That's terrible - I don't understand WHY they didn't send an emergency train for your train - they did for the train that hit the boy.
DH ws SUPPOSED to get the 5:19 - and missed it as usual. So of course he wound up spending 2 hours in Penn, and then I had to pick him up in Bayside (we live in Seaford, mind you).
That family is suing the LIRR -- what a crock! So many lives were disrupted...the child was TRESPASSING and DEFACING private property.
Sorry it was so awful for you Lisa!!

They have my sypathy that they lost a child but now I also think they're very greedy. I mean come on, they haven't even had a funeral for the kid yet and they already have decided on a lawsuit?

Oh I totally agree -- what happened to their son is awful and no, you don't know where your child is every moment of the day. What a tragedy for them....
But at the same time - I think they actually owe an apology to the commuters - does that make sense??

I sent a letter to LIRR stating that I purchased a Peak Ticket but arrived at my destination at Off Peak. Let's see if anything happens from the letter.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience
How disgusting that the family is suing the LIRR. That case should never make it to court IMO. I'm sorry for their loss, but the kid was on the tracks! Come on, he knew it was dangerous.
Being stuck on a train for hours is awful. I was stuck on a NJ Transit train like that once, because there was a fire near the tracks ahead of us. I didn't blame NJ Transit, but it was gross. It was summer, so it was really hot on the train. When the windows were opened, mosquitos came in, yuck! I didn't have a cell phone at the time, and I paid some guy $10 to call home and let my now ex-boyfriend know where I was.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience
Wasn't on that train but I was on another. It took me a total of 3 hrs to get home.
I missed an appointment that was very important.
I feel for the parents of the boy. I wish it didn't happen.
I don't think it was the parents fault entirey and I don't think the boy deserved to die, but playing on RR tracks is just stupid.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience
I'm a little claustraphobic - nothing major. Over the summer my train stopped somewhere between Jamaica and Locust Manor because a tarp or something went on the tracks in Freeport. It was like an hour or an hour and a half just sitting there and I was getting a little freaked out because I didn't know how long we'd be there.
So for you people that were stuck for in a train for more than an hour - you have my sympathy

I hope not. I don't see the point in doing this. it was a tragedy...and it had nothing to do with the LIRR.
just be grateful it wasn't a young kid in your family doing what many young people do...being young and doing stupid things. he paid the ultimate price...I am sure you could eat your $2 extra.
I can't even complain about the wait, knowing that this poor kid's family is going through. It was a foolish and stupid mistake MANY kids make every year (on ALL MTA lines)
hopefully, one day, they will learn.

I agree. I mean, is it really something to be up in arms about - a kid DIED.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience
It has nothing to do with the money, it is just that this happens alot and something needs to be done with the fencing and a back up plan needs to be made. Our conductor actually told us all to write a letter so that maybe they would come up with some type of backup plan.

I don't think you can have a "back up" plan when you are trying to figure out the best way to extricate a human body from in between the train and the tracks...
the system is constantly moving...there will always be a "back up" of trains...especially at rush hour...
you just have to hope that less people will make such a risky and costly error in judgement.
