I sent a letter to LIRR stating that I purchased a Peak Ticket but arrived at my destination at Off Peak. Let's see if anything happens from the letter.

I hope not. I don't see the point in doing this. it was a tragedy...and it had nothing to do with the LIRR.

just be grateful it wasn't a young kid in your family doing what many young people do...being young and doing stupid things. he paid the ultimate price...I am sure you could eat your $2 extra.

I can't even complain about the wait, knowing that this poor kid's family is going through. It was a foolish and stupid mistake MANY kids make every year (on ALL MTA lines)

hopefully, one day, they will learn.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

It has nothing to do with the money, it is just that this happens alot and something needs to be done with the fencing and a back up plan needs to be made. Our conductor actually told us all to write a letter so that maybe they would come up with some type of backup plan.

I don't think you can have a "back up" plan when you are trying to figure out the best way to extricate a human body from in between the train and the tracks...

the system is constantly moving...there will always be a "back up" of trains...especially at rush hour...

you just have to hope that less people will make such a risky and costly error in judgement.

I agree. Our conductor was mad because they were not communicating to him from Jamaica.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience

I am no fan of the LIRR but I think you can only plan so much for something like that and then do the best that you can when you have 1000's of people and 100's of trains to move.

As I understand it, the accident happened at 5:40 - just as the rush hours were hitting full peak. And it involved a couple of tracks which limited their options in terms of getting trains through.

I also cannot imagine that a fence will keep kids or "artists" or whatever off the tracks. It was an unfortunate and stupid choice the poor kid made. I feel for his family. I feel worse for the engineer driving the train.

Me too. The engineer should sue them for the emotional trauma he has to deal with now for the rest of his life, and it wasn't even his fault.

Wow!
Someones child died. How can anyone be annoyed that they had to sit on the train a little longer?

She asked who was on the train with her during this. Nothing about being angry or annoyed.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience

I am talking about the people were were saying, their "lives were disrupted". And how they got home SO much later than they usually do. A kid died and you are complaining that you got home too late.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience

Somehow we lucked out. I was on the 5:44 to Port Washington. We left Penn at around 6:20 and I got home at 7:30 (usually 6:30). It was just really frustrating. Cell phones weren't working on our track, we didn't really know what was going on, and I'm sure everyone was just ready to get home on a Friday night after working all week.

Actually, there is some crazy statistic like 4 per year, regarding engineers and fatalities. Are you really saying that the engineer should sue the family of this kid? Chat Icon

Pt Washington trains don't have to go through the same track -- that's why DH went to Bayside.

Yes someone died - it is a tragedy. At the same time, people's lives were disrupted - you don't know who had an emergency to get home to -- and this should never have happened. I would be annoyed too if I were delayed - I was annoyed that I had to drive 45 min. to pick up DH because a kid was breaking the law, sorry.

And even if they fix the fences - they rip them right back down again.

Re: Fridays LIRR Experience

I'm sensitive to the tragedy that this was for the family of the child - but as a customer of the LIRR - - they need to develop better emergency management to communicate with their customers in situations like these. Jamaica was like mass mayhem - - and there were no regular announcements to facilitate people's transportation.

The sad reality is that accidents like this do happen - - they should develop contingency plans to better manage their business. I'm sure they have them in place - but they weren't very clear on Friday night.

Again, I'm sad for the family, and I'm not whining that it took me longer to get home - - - but we pay a hefty sum for monthly tickets, and we deserve a bit more as customers.
