Friends Dog attacked her child. Need Info
My friends dog attacked her child. Very bad last night. On the face - 60+ stitches. Thankfully, missing the eyes.
They are beyond devastated by the entire thing. She is so overwhelmed with taking care of her child at the hospital, that she hasn't even dealt with what to do with the dog.
I am trying to find out for her where she can bring the dog. She obviously doesn't want to bring her to just any shelter, in fear she will be put down (though I think that may be the only answer at this point) The dog had showed aggressive behavior in the past so she got extensive training and the dog thrived. Has been a model pet for over a year now. But last night, she just snapped and her youngest baby caught the brunt of it.
My heart is breaking for the whole family. It's very hard to have to let go of a pet, who is like a family member, but when it comes to keeping your family safe, you sometimes have no choice. I'm hoping the shelter we can get her in will help rehabilitate her again and then make sure she doesn't go into a home with small children.
They live in Syosset.
Any shelters / rescues close to them that she can bring the dog? And that the dog will still have a fighting chance?
TIA

I think when the dust settles your friend needs to realize that the dog SHOULD be put down. Sixty stitches is not a little nip and with aggression in the past imo the dog will probably bite again.

Re: Friends Dog attacked her child. Need Info
I am not sure. The dog could still thrive in a home but it would have to be a childless home after this incident. I am trying to think where to suggest. There are many dogs that do better in a home without small children.
What a terrible situation. I hope their DD is ok.

Thank you. The baby is doing ok. Swollen and groggy from pain meds. My friend however, is a mess. I am not familiar with no kill shelters here on LI who would take the dog. So any suggestions will be very much appreciated.
To the PP who said just out her down: The the dog may still have a chance to live out the rest of her days just not in a home with small children. I had an aggressive dog at one point. I knew his triggers and made sure to respect him and he respected me. Is this the right situation for everyone? no. But for me and my dog at the time, it worked.

What is the breed of the dog? it is possible that a breed specific rescue might be the best option here.

She is a Mix she rescued so she's not exactly sure. Definitely Border Collie and Pretty Sure Australia Shepherd.
They got her from North shore when she was 2 months old. She'll be 8 in August

I know it's a long time ago, but maybe North Shore would take her bacK? Do they have a policy on that?

I understand but to me there's got to be a limit and from what you described, this dog is beyond it. Also don't forget that it will be near impossible to home an eight year old dog that gave a baby sixty stitches in the face.

I'm not sure I agree with that. One would need to know if anything precipitated the bite (such as food possession, fear, pain, play, possessiveness, etc). There are dogs who get nervous around small children and adopters who are older or retired or no children or grandchildren who might be a perfect fit for this dog depending on the circumstance behind the bite.
Also could the dog be in pain? Could there be an underlying medical issue that caused the agitation or aggressiveness? This should be determined if the owner feels she would like her dog to have a chance.

Maybe have her talk to North Shore and see what they say? From what I've heard (I could be wrong), they're a no-kill shelter, so maybe they can help her.
So heartbreaking

Friends Dog attacked her child. Need Info
This is such a terrible situation for all involved. The only suggestion that I can think of (that hasn't already been discussed) would be to contact the dog's vet to see if they can put you in touch with a shelter or rescue organization that could be of assistance. I hope the baby makes a full recovery.

I would be really worried about giving the dog to the shelter as there is no way to know whether the shelter would convey that information to potential new owners.

North shore does not take the dogs they adopt out back- The shelter I volunteer at has received dogs that were adopted from North shore that they would not take back and it is NOT near by. Unfortunately even no kill shelters will euthanize a dog that is considered a threat to humans. Most shelters do not discuss this openly but it happens. I think the only chance your friend has to save her dog is to re-home the dog on her own with full disclosure of the dog's history.

I thought this as well but that will take a long time. She has 2 small children. She wouldn't feel comfortable keeping her there for a long period of time.
I told her to call NS and ask. And to ask her vet as PP has mentioned. If a no kill shelter deems the dog as unfit to be placed, then that's what it will be. It's so sad all around

Ugh this story totally breaks my heart, for both her poor child and her dog.
I have a mastiff thats is trained by a professional every week, I dont have kids yet (hopefully one day) but it's something i fear in the bottom of my heart. I wish the very best for your friend and a speedy recovery for her child

So sad :( try canine counsel (they have a Facebook page) If he can't help you-maybe he can direct you to where to go.
I am curious as to the scenario or sequence of events leading up to the bite. Particularly for education/awareness for others.
While I don't know the facts of this story---a dog with an aggressive history really should not have been able to get so close to that baby--even with the training-I would always have been extra cautious-keeping the dog away from children. I also agree w/Goobster--there could have been other variables--like pain, etc.
Thank goodness the bite wasn't near the eyes. Tell your friend to be cautious in the summer sun-lots of sunblock-staying out of the sun to prevent scarring.
Poor kid and poor dog--unfortunate situation :(

My friends dog attacked her child. Very bad last night. On the face - 60+ stitches. Thankfully, missing the eyes.
They are beyond devastated by the entire thing. She is so overwhelmed with taking care of her child at the hospital, that she hasn't even dealt with what to do with the dog.

They live in Syosset.
Any shelters / rescues close to them that she can bring the dog? And that the dog will still have a fighting chance?
TIA
What was the aggressive behavior in the past? What triggered the past aggressive behavior? Was it food aggression, a sudden movement, etc.?

I'm not 100% on the past aggression but that is the reason for the extra training just for precaution.
She was with the baby. They went into the den where the dog was and the baby was waving at her. She said it happened in slow motion... he was waving and then the dog just lunged at him. No rhyme or reason. She was holding his other hand while it happened. She then choked the dog out to get her off and then as she grabbed the baby and tried to run, the dog bit her too. Totally unprovoked. She is so in shock with the whole thing.

I wonder if the dog is developing some kind of dementia. That happened to our dog when I was a kid, although she was a bit older than your friend's dog. I went in to the house to get something and the dog didn't recognize me and backed me up against the wall.
I hope that your friend's baby is recovering well. Have they been able to figure out what they're going to do with the dog?

They are definitely giving her up. Just trying to find the right place to do it. She contacted her trainer as well who knows of different kinds of rescues.

I give your friend a lot of credit that despite everything she is dealing with, she is still trying to do the right thing by the dog. I hope that someone is able to find a suitable home for the dog.

I'd have to believe that I would do the same. My dogs are my life and for now, my only "Babies". If the day came that I did have children and something this traumatic happened, I couldn't just toss them out. Making the decision to raise and care for a pet comes with responsibility. And this is part of it.
I know a lot of people disagree, but that's ok. Everyone does what's right for them.

First. I am so sorry to hear this. I hope the baby doesn't have any lonmg term problems. I think the dog needs a full physical to check for health issues. If given a medical all clear honestly... I would put the dog down bnc the dog even bit the owner :( unless someone adopted him full knmowinmg the issues I fear a shelter would put him down or adopt him out not fully disclosing the problem. Just imagine this happening to someone else would weigh too heavily on me :(
