from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
If you odn't mind me asking.
We are buying a house, but not moving, so we will be furnishing everything basically from scratch.
we did you splurge vs. where did you save?
I was thinking just going all out on our bedroom, the living room and the dining room/kitchen and kinda Ikea-ing the other bedrooms and such....
or is it just better to go all out in the outselt.
I don't want to have empty rooms, but there are other things we would probably want to focus on intially.
what was your experience like?
TIA

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
About 7,000.00 here. I bought from levitz and charged everything and paid it back after i closed and had some extra cash.
I bought: den furniture kitchen table set (4 chairs & leaf) dining room set and hutch bedroom furniture = 2 nightstands, chest of drawers, dresser, mirror. formal living room just a couch.
i had a lot of stuff from my grandparents passing (god rest their souls).

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
It's hard to say how much we spent b/c a year later, we are still furnishing. We concentrated initially on the living room, kitchen/dining area, then moved on to the bedroom. I'm not to matchy matchy, so I like hunting it down piece by piece.
Furniture varies so much in price, but if you plan to buy really good quality furniture, plan on spending a few to several thousand per room.

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
I own an apartment so I did not have too many rooms to furnish. I really don't remember how much I spent on furniture, but this was my rationale on which rooms I spent more/less on.
I planned on spending a decent amount on our bedroom because bedroom furniture lasts for a really long time. However, I wound up seeing a set I really liked at Raymour and Flanagan so I just bought it. I don't remember how much it was, but it was not a fortune.
I did not want to spend a lot on my dining area because I knew we likely would be selling our apartment within 5 years and I wasn't sure what the next place would be like. I bought a table and chairs with matching sideboard from R&F. It was reasonable, but fairly decent.
As for our living room, we already had couches so we didn't buy any. I bought an entertainment center and tables from Fortunoff. They were not that cheap and the tables wound up being defective. I bought replacement tables from Crate & Barrel.
I think your plan sounds good. I wouldn't spend a fortune on spare bedrooms. I would also start with the rooms that you are going to use the most.

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
We didnt bring any furniture with us when we moved from NY to FL. We wanted all new. We were having our house built, new house, new beginning, new furniture.
I dont even know how much we paid in total. We bought things over a matter of 2 years to get all the rooms furnished. We have a formal living room and family room (which needed 2 sets of living room furniture), a formal dining room, office, guest room and our bedroom which all needed to be furnished.

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
We're still at it but rough estimates:
Den has a lot from our coop so not expensive stuff Leather pull out - Macys $1100 TV stand - Crate & Barrel $400 Area rug - Target $150 Faux leather bench (coffee table) - Fortunoff $200 Lamp $50
No art yet
Living Room Couch - Macys $2200 Chairs - Fortunoff $1200 Fireplace screen Target $50 Frames Kohls $200 Side Table Fortunoff $200 Area Rug Overstock $400
Bedroom Furniture from Katz (saw at the Door Store) $4500 Mattress $2700 Lamps Home Goods $60
Nursery Furniture $1800 Rug/Curtains - PB Kids $200 Lamps Home Goods $60
We still need a lot of "decor" stuff, a kitchen table (we're still under construction in there) and dining room furniture (which may never happen if DS takes over that room with toys
HTH - We got a lot of stuff on sale and "finds"

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
This is just roughly off the top of my head:
Dining room set - 4500 (we had a no interest card for two years and paid it off at the end of the two years)
Bedroom set - I used to work at Ethan Allen years ago - it was a 4K set -- I got it for less than that.
Living Room - Ethan Allen huge wall unit - we paid 2500 - again half the price bc since I used to work there - they hooked me up.
Sectional - 1600 Raymour and Flanigan.
Babies Room - 3500
Kitchen Table and Shelves - 1000 Crate and Barrell
Office Furniture - 1000 Raymour and Flanigan
I would say Rugs, Window Treatments, Blinds, pictures, and random pieces of furniture throughout the house all cost about 3000 in total.
HTH somewhat!
Good luck - and Happy Shopping!!!!

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
Ok, I'll answer your question first.
Master BR set=King size bed w/mattress, dresser w/mirror, and 2 nightstands=$4K
LR set=couch, love seat, armchair w/ottoman, coffee table, 2 end tables, and 2 table lamps=$2K
Kitchen table and 6 chairs=$500
DD's daybed w/mattress=$350
Now I apologize in advance for asking this question because I know it's not the point of the thread, but why?? I'm just curious as to why you're not taking your furniture, didn't you just buy new BR furniture for your anniversary?

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
thanks for starting this thread..we are sort of in the same situation...moving from an apartment to a house and need EVERYTHING! all our furniture is from college or old school ikea. so this thread is giving me a good indication of what I can expect to spend....(even though I know it depends on quality, amount of furniture, size of rooms etc)...anyway thanks.

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
I was lucky enough to get a few hand me downs and it helped - A LOT. My parents gave us their Thomasville dining room set. We saved a ton by not having to but one. They also gave me my childhood furniture which I am using in the nursery and in the guest room I am using my father's childhood furniture (still in great shape!)
My theory was that I wanted to finish the "public" areas of the house first bc that is what most people would seeing and I would hold off on MB furniture.
The house is almost done. I need a lot of accessories in most of the rooms as well as a master bedroom set and a sofa for the basement and a few other random things.
Here's what I think I have spent so far.
Kitchen - almost $2k on the table and window treatments
Dining Room - - about $1,600 on window treatments
Formal LR - about $7k so far including the window treatments. I guess this have been my "splurge" room .
Den - we had everything in here from our apt, but when the stuff was orginally purchase we probably spent around $5K total.
Basement - $1,500 so far - we still need a sofa and some other stuff.
When it comes to the Master Bedroom, not sure what I want to do. I'd love to go all out on it, but it's a pretty small. I would hope that we would move in about 7-10 years, so I'd rather spend a small fortune when I have a bigger room!

Den-Couch with Queen Sofa Bed and two ottomans- Jennifer Convertible- about $1900 TV Stand, Stereo Cabinet, CD Racks- $500
Office- $1500 for desk and hutch

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
After 2 years, we're still furnishing the house. It's a little over 5,000 sq/ft and when we moved in we had almost nothing. So we have a lot of rooms to furnish, plus a finished basement!
So far though I'd estimate we've spent around $14k. We still have to furnish one of the guest bedrooms and buy some accessory pieces for some of the other rooms.

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
I honestly couldn't tell you....spent a lot when we moved in to our apartment since we had never lived together..using that furniture now. Bought patio furniture, furniture for our den including a desk and couch.
we bought stuff that the previous owners had for basement and kitchen.
We still have two totally unfurnished bedrooms upstairs which hopefully one day will be a nursery/child's room

i would budget btwn $5k - 10k per room. however, LR and den could easily exceed 10k.

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
If it's a place you plan on being in for a long time and your taste doesn't change much over time, I'd go all out now and do it the way you'd do it later... we went cheap with our office/2nd bedroom, but got a bedroom set we could keep for the long haul, and a living room entertainment center and couch and tables that will be with us for a long time... we have a nice dining room set with 6 chairs that cost about $1k, but will probably be sold when we move on in a few years and have a place with a formal dining room... My thought process was that we had the $ now, and when we go to buy our next place, hopefully we'll be in a better place financially, but you never know, and I don't want to be 15 years out of college with my IKEA bedroom set from my dorm... that was just us though :) look into 0% cards - they are GREAT!!!! Macy's Furniture Gallery is where we got our bedroom from on 4th of July sale last year... check it out they have good quality, but not crazy expensive

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
thank you so much for sharing ladies. this is very helpful.
cindy, to answer your question, we are still going to live part time in our apt in Brooklyn, and the living room there is set up to perfectly match the furniture we bought.
it's also a bit more modern, and I think will go a bit more cozy farmhouse country with the home upsate (think Pottery Barn...in an actual barn )
thanks so much again for the feedback!

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
we are in the same boat. We have always lived in apartments and refused to buy nice furniture. So we have nothing but a TV that we are bringing with us. We are finally becoming adults and saying good buy to the ikea stuff!!!! We are going to take it room by room and concentrate on what we need first.
Thankfully we live in the furniture capital of the world!!

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
I haven't bought all the furniture for my house yet--as we finish rooms we buy new furniture.
Our bedroom--king bed/mattress, tall dresser, long dresser with mirror and 2 nightstands was $5600.
Den--couch, coffee table, end table & a long storage cabinet was $3200.
Although I haven't bought it yet I know that my DR is going to cost me around $3500 because I have already priced it out.
The other three rooms--one is an office which I hope to redo very soon as we are getting new windows and changing our radiator to baseboard should cost us around $1500 and a nursery is the last---have no idea how much that is goign to cost and a living room---haven't really thought of that since it is last on my list to do.
I have furniture in my DR & LR from my apartment which cost us $2200 total.
There are pictures of both in my album

Re: from soup to nuts, how much did you spend furnishing your new home?
I don't even want to think about it
we are in a similar situation as some above posters
we have lived in apartments for years- and don't have much - what I consider- "real" furniture
or real enough for me to spend the money transporting in 1,000 miles to FL
we are going to need everything!
I am guessing $25K +
we will do it slowly over time
I like to get deals
