Re: Frontline
We use it... we give it to Cooper in the beginning of the month. This year we did it every month because it was so warm this winter, but normally they suggest giving it to your pet March-October.

We get this too (Deter, maybe??) but I am using Frontline as well because Scout goes to lots of park and to the mountains... The vet said it was good to have the extra protection for him, because of his lifestyle.
We will start this month -- gotta remind DH since I am not supposed to touch the stuff!

Re: Frontline
I use K9 Advantix. I was told by the vet that with the K9 all the flea or tick has to do is land on the dogs fur or skin and it will kill it. With Frontline, the animal has to actually be bitten by the nasty thing before it will die.

Re: Frontline
We use Frontline March-October. There is a pesticide that I am allergic to and my vet says that Frontline is the only one that does not have that chemical or any related chemical.

My vet doesnt sell this because it is deadly to cats...if you have a cat.

Re: Frontline
I don't use these on my dogs. I used to when they were puppies but they are so small (4.5 and 6 lbs) I felt like it was too much chemical for them. They use to get bad irritations from it.

Yes but you live in the city Jes. We have woods behind our apartments and we take him out to parks often. I don't think it's necessary for dogs in an urban environment but if the dog is being exposed to ticks it's important.

Re: Frontline
I use it on Misty when standing water is not frozen. Those were the guidelines our vet told us. The ticks and fleas are inactive when it is really cold but as soon as puddles are all melted and stay that way start using again.
This year we stopped in January and haven't started up again.

BTW, the ticks will still be able to climb on the dog...they just don't dig in and if they do, they will die. It goes into their skin glands and kills the fleas and ticks that way. I have come home many times and pulled ticks off Misty, but they usually never get a chance to dig in.

Thanks for all of hte responses.
I wanted to give her extra protection because my parents have a large yard with lots of trees.
What would be the alternative to Frontline?

Re: Frontline
we use Frontline, we have to , our backyard is all woods -and they live in our grass- Boogie would go outside and play and would come in with ticks, one time we saw 6 of them at once! it was horrible! This is when we realized how bad it was and went to the vet-he suggested frontline
We also get him a vaccine against lyme disease just in case because our area is so heavily wooded

That's the odd thing about it. I give it to him once a month on the dot and the tick still was able to dig in. That's what worried me. I had to to remove it with a tweezer. Thank goodness it was only a dog tick but it had definitely engorged itself with blood.

I have had that happen also, apparently the Frontline prevents them from living on the dog and transferring blood back into the dog.
