Fundraisers my a$$... more like harrassers and bullies
So here is a conversation I just had with someone calling my house at 8:40 this morning to solicit money for some NJ State Police fund that DH gave a donation to last year:
ME: Hello?
Jackass: Is Chris there? (that's DH)
ME: Can I ask who is calling?
Jackass: Scott Solomon.
ME: What is this in reference to?
Jackass: The NJ Police (something) fund. Can I speak with Chris?
ME: Can I take your name and number and he can give you a call back?
Jackass: WHO IS THIS? (um, excuse me... you called MY house and you are asking who I am?)
ME: EXCUSE ME?
Jackass: Is this his wife?
ME: Yes it is (with attitude)
Jackass: Launches into a speech about how they appreciate the donation we made last year and how they are going to send us stickers to put on our windows at home and in our cars. Then he starts getting into his very sly ask for money again, starting with $75 and then asking what he can put me down for.
ME: We would prefer to get something in the mail before we make a decision.
Jackass: I am sending you something in the mail, the stickers.
ME: No, we don't make committments for donations over the phone.
Jackass: I'll just call back and speak with Chris... CLICK
And you think this is the way to get donations? To piss off and be rude to the people you are trying to get money from? I remember the last time DH agreed to send a donation, they sent us things every week that looked like a bill and continued to call us asking for the money.
Let's just say I called DH to tell him and he CAN'T WAIT for them to call back so that he can give them a piece of his mind and tell them they will not be getting any more of our money. We will find our own group to donate to.
Ugh... I was so mad!

I agree!
The WORST call I get at work is Suffolk Police looking for donations. We donated once and they call back pretending like it's a personal call for the boss 
Honestly, if he wasn't such an arrogant jerk when he called, we might still donate!! It's the attitude and rudeness that made up stop donating!!

Oh I get those calls all the time b/c I donatied a few times.. I believe its the police athletic league (or something with the letters PAL)
They are horrible... when you tell them you just can't donate this year, times are tough... they say something like 'well I'll just send you the $10 sticker' and if you deny them they pretty much make you feel GUILTY about it.
$10 is not much, and I WILL donate it to a good cause, but not if the person is going to outright tell me I'm a horrible person if I don't put forth this donation... I'll give it elsewhere.

I can't stand rude soliciters! I always say I'm sorry I'm just the nanny or once I told someone I was my dh's mistress and he'd have to call back so we can finish before the wife got home....he never called back.LOL!

I got this call this weekend...I told him I don't support organizations like his and I donate elsewhere...he got off the phone with me very quickly.

That's a fake charity. We get calls for them all the time. They always change their name slightly (sometimes it's the NY Police something and the next time it'll be the NYS disabled police and the next time something firefighters) and thank me for last year's donation. One time I told them I know I hadn't donated to them because I only donate to the PBA since my brother is on the job and the guy yelled "Oh sh!t!" and hung up. The calls stopped for about 2 years but have picked up again the past 9 months or so.

The PAL (Police Athletic League)does this. Last year when they called they kept telling me how my DH agreed to donate to them and that my DH asked them to speak with me for the payment information. Never happened!
I also do not like "donations' that are really deemed mandatory.
As a side: maybe someone can answer me why I *have* to donate to my local fire department when I already pay taxes. If it is a "donation", why I am harassed when I don't send in a check?

I have to remember that one!!! 
I hate solicitors, of any kind, but especially at 8:40am. I tell them to just send me something in the mail bc it's easier to ignore them that way. And then I hang up.

We were getting these phone calls too - LOTS of pressure on the other end and would NOT get off the phone with us being nice. I had no idea they were fake! Good thing they were so rude that we decided NO WAY would we donate!

When I used to answer my phone without screening I would tell these fakey "police" charities that my husband is NYPD and our "donation" to police organizations is the horrendously low salary he works for.
They never had a come back for that one!

First off, which FD? Certain departments have paid and volunteer divisions, and others are strictly volunteer.
When I was with a 100% volunteer ambulance corps which relied solely on donations, and responded to the majority of ambulance calls in the town (more than the volunteer FD), I had to answer this question constantly. Many people didn't see the significance or need until they needed our services. So my department switched to an optional billing system - meaning, you can send in the suggested bill for the service you received to your insurance company, or do nothing with it. That was so much better than the fund drive, and enabled things like much-needed repairs to the station and ambulances, and to upgrade equipment.

Also... Many local charities farm out donation requests to agencies instead of doing it themselves. The actual $ going to the charity in those cases is not 100% and the overhead for these places is high. There was a big expose in Newsday last year about this.
I wouldn't be surprised if these people were doing double duty as telemarketers and collections.

I got one.
I received a call from someone claiming to be with PAL (Police Athletic League), thanking me for my donation last year & if he could count on me to donate the same amount this year.
I told him if he could please send me the material in the mail, I'd be glad to review them & send what I could this year.
He wouldn't take no for an answer, kept running his mouth.
Finally, I told him "Look I don't have time for this right now, if you want to send me the info through the mail, I'll be happy to make some sort of donation that I FEEL is appropriate".
He tells me "Well ... we'll take that into consideration if & when you need US to come & help you out" 
Needless to say I now choose to donate to other charities besides the PD.

My mother once explained that they could barely feed their children (me LOL) at the moment and she was sorry. The guy asked why her children were more important than a disabled officer! 
I only donate to my local volunteer firefighters/ambulance - I got tired of all of these fake charities.

What a dumb azz that guy was. No REAL police dept runs on donations only- and they would NEVER be able to not respond to a job because you didn't donate. They would be brought under investigation so fast their head would spin.

DH contributes to PAL every year. This year when the call came in he told them that he was sorry, but it was a rough year and he couldn't afford to donate anything. The solicitor then said "Really? Nothing?" DH then said "No, I'm sorry but it's tight here and I just can't do it." The solicitor yelled "Fine!" and slammed the phone down. I could not believe the rudeness.

It's Islip FD. I am not sure if it is fully volunteer, but I am assuming it is. Believe me I am MORE than grateful for the people that volunteer their time. But last year I missed the notice about sending in a donation. I then received the nastiest letter in the mail telling me how they would never forget me, so I shouldn't forget them. Honestly, I found the letter to be quite threatening. I actually saved it somewhere at home, because it bothered me so much.
You mention money going towards repairs and such. See if I was told that they had to raise funds for that or at least showed me what they were putting it towards, I would be more than happy. I guess as just a resident I don't really know exactly what my taxes are paying for in my FD, so when they are looking for additional funds I get a bit skeptical. Plus, last year just left a bad taste in my mouth.
